Elmer Rutledge Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 3, 2024.
Elmer Oceola Rutledge, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 29, 2024, at the age of 82 in Odessa, Texas. Born on March 27, 1942, in Knox City, Texas, to W.F. (Bill) Rutledge and Trasda Elena Roper, Elmer grew into a man of integrity, warmth, and dedication-a beacon of kindness in the lives of those who knew him.

A proud graduate of Vera High School in 1960, Elmer furthered his education at Commercial College in Lubbock, Texas, where he honed the skills that would serve him throughout his varied and fulfilling career. His professional journey began at Frost Bakery, when he moved to Odessa, then he found a long-term career with Rexene. Elmer dedicated three decades of his life to Griffin Butane Company, retiring with a legacy of loyalty and hard work.

Elmer's life was a testament to the love he had for his family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Elaine Rutledge; his sons, Ronnie Rutledge and Steve Rutledge, along with Steve's wife, Heather. He was a loving and proud grandfather to Braden Rutledge, Lauren McCullough, and Ryne McCullough, and his wife, Nakalee. His joy was further multiplied with the arrival of twin great-grandsons, Owen and Colt McCullough. Elmer's parents, W.F. (Bill) Rutledge and Trasda Elena Roper, predeceased him, leaving behind a legacy of family values that Elmer carried forward with grace.

Those who knew Elmer understood his passion for the outdoors and the simple pleasures of life. Farming and ranching were not just pastimes but a way of life that Elmer embraced wholeheartedly. His hands were rarely still, as he found solace and joy in woodworking, creating beautiful pieces that are cherished by his family and friends. Elmer's love for camping brought him closer to nature and provided countless memories under the stars with those he loved.

A respected figure in the community, Elmer served as a director of the Permian Basin Fair and Expo, where he contributed his time and talents to ensure the success of this beloved local event. His enthusiasm for garden tractor pulling was more than a hobby; it was a passion that brought excitement and camaraderie. As a member of the Odessa Propbusters, Elmer shared his love for model aviation, soaring high with friends who shared his interests.

Elmer Rutledge will be remembered as a loving, gentle, and kind soul. His warm smile and generous spirit left a lasting impression on everyone he met. He lived a life full of meaningful connections, laughter, and unwavering support for his loved ones. Elmer's legacy is one of love, commitment, and the gentle strength that defined his character.

As we bid farewell to Elmer, we celebrate a life well-lived, a journey marked by compassion, and a man who truly made the world a better place. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, and the stories of his life will be told with fondness and admiration by all who were fortunate enough to know him. Elmer Oceola Rutledge, a man of the earth, a craftsman of wood, and a cultivator of joy, will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.

I was always impressed by his ability in the classroom. One of my favorite memories of him was the day I walked into the classroom and he and a friend grabbed me so his good friend could kiss me.

I will always remember Elmer riding on a tractor preparing the dirt for the garden tractor pulls at the PB Fair. He helped out anywhere he could. A great man who will be deeply missed.

Elmer was a great volunteer with the 4-H and FFA, Ector County Stock show. He wrote one of the first computer programs for entering all the information for the kids and animals. This made breaking animals into classes and printing classes so easy. Elmer was a great asset to the Permian Basin Fair and Sand Hills Rodeo he will be missed. He was a very special man and friend.
