Eloise, I will miss you dearly. You were a great source of inspiration to a young scholar and a great rarity - an all-around generous, kind, thoughtful person. I am extraordinarily lucky to have known you.

Eloise was an inspiring linguist and an inspiring person. Her work on a host of typologically diverse languages gave her an exceptionally clear perspective on the nature of language, and her publications always excited me and advanced my thinking about language. Her work brilliantly demonstrates the worth of combining theoretical enquiry with language documentation. Eloise's strength and positive attitude despite ill health over so many years was just so admirable. Eloise will be deeply missed. My condolences to her family and colleagues.

Eloise was not only my mentor, but a friend as well. We shared many laughs as we pored over some Hiaki language phrases. Sometimes she would say something in my language then realize her mistake and start laughing. Her laughter was so contagious, I found myself laughing right along with her even though I didn't know what we were laughing about. Although I will not speak to you again in this world Eloise, I look forward to sharing a laugh with you in the next. Chukula
