Elsie Brous Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 26, 2024.
Elsie was born on April 2, 1923, in Catskill, upstate New York, the daughter of the late James Metsopulos and Olga (Theodore) Metsopulos. Elsie was a graduate with high honors from John Adams High School in Ozone Park, Long Island, New York in the class of January 1941. She graduated from The Wood School, New York City, New York, and was on the Dean's List. Pan American Airways, located at La Guardia Airport employed her in the Engineering Publications Section, first as an executive secretary later promoting her to Publications Editor. After the War, she met Chris Brous, and they got married on June 8, 1947. Over the very happy 70 years of marriage, they belonged to several Greek Orthodox Churches in America, the latest two being Church of the Archangels in Stamford, CT and St. George Cathedral in Hartford, CT. She was a life-long member of the Ladies Philoptochos Society, and a volunteer Sunday school teacher. She also produced the church newsletter and arranged many trips for the Archangels Senior Group. Elsie authored an award-winning Greek/American cookbook of 200 pages, "Recipes from Elsie's Kitchen." The book was published and donated to the Archangels Ladies Philoptochos Society. All proceeds from the sales are used for their philanthropic endeavors. As member of the Saint George Cathedral, she belonged to the Ladies Philoptochos, and supported their works to help the needy. She is survived by her daughter Dorothy Paleologos, her son James Brous (wife Mary Scherer); two granddaughters Valerie Brous (husband Michael Peppler) and Maria Paleologos Green (husband Larry); and four great-grandchildren, Calvert, Benjamin, and Anna Green and Zeke Peppler. Her loving husband Chris, and siblings Ann Pavlakis (husband George), June Petrides (husband Thracy), Gus Metro and George Metsopulos (wife Stella) preceded her in death.

The Wake will be on April 29, 2024 at 5:00pm -8:00pm, including a 6:15pm Trisagion memorial service at the Dillon Baxter Funeral Home, 1276 Berlin Turnpike, Wethersfield, CT. The Funeral Service will be on April 30 at 10:00am at the St. George Greek Orthodox Cathedral (433 Fairfield Avenue, Hartford, CT 06114). Interment will be at 2:30pm at the St.Mary/Putnam Cemetery (35 Parsonage Rd, Greenwich, CT 06830).

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Ladies Philoptochos Society, a charity organization dedicated to helping the needy, in honor of the deceased.

I have not seen my Aunt Elsie since I was a child, visiting the family in San Diego. It's so cool that she lived to be 100! I wish I could have visited more recently but I enjoyed talking to her and Uncle Bubby a few years ago on the phone. I love reading about her here, and Hope I can connect with family members connected to her and my family tree at some time!!

Dear Dorothy and Family so very sorry for the enormous loss of your beloved Mother. You were so devoted. I’ll always cherish the wonderful Birthday party for her 100th at Church and the day before my Birthday on the 3rd really made it special. My Mom Ann was 1923 we were blessed to have her 3 months shy of 97 and it never is long enough. We celebrated Mom’s Heavenly 100th in December. May your Mother’s beautiful Memory be Eternal. With Love and Sympathy Angela Soter

Today I am remembering the wonderful days spent with my BFF at your home in Greenwich. Fun times at the beach with a very protective Grandfather and Elsie kept us well fed all day long. In fact my first time eating meatloaf was in your kitchen- a favorite till today. I hope you are enjoying a dance with the love of your life. XO
