Elwood Kenneth (Al) Dethloff, born on May 18, 1928, in Plymouth Township, MI, passed away at the age of 97 on July 11, 2025 in Brighton, Michigan. Beloved son of Walter Emil Dethloff and Hazel Marion (Klatt) Dethloff. Elwood was known for his honest and fair demeanor, traits that guided him throughout his life.

Elwood had a distinguished career, starting with his service in the Michigan Air National Guard, which was activated to full-time service in 1951 at a United States Air Force base in Glendale, Arizona during the Korean conflict. He was honorably discharged in June 1952. Post-military, Elwood joined the Ypsilanti Michigan Police Department in 1952, retiring as Chief of Police in 1978. His dedication to public service was evident throughout his career, which also included time at Daisy Air Rifle Company and the Plymouth Post Office.

An alumnus of Plymouth High School, class of 1947, Elwood valued education and community involvement. His commitment to his community extended into his religious life; he was a past member of the 1st United Presbyterian Church in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and later, joined the Beaverton First Presbyterian Church in Beaverton, Michigan.

Elwood's personal life was rich with interests in family, genealogy, numismatics, and fishing, each reflecting his deep love for history, nature, and family ties. He was a family man at heart, always cherishing time spent with loved ones.

Elwood is survived by his children, Kenneth A. Dethloff of Ocala, Florida; Marcia (John) Gibbins of Gladwin, Michigan; Steven B. (Lori) Dethloff of Massachusetts; and James S (Cyndi) Dethloff of Pinckney, Michigan. His legacy also lives on through his numerous grandchildren, a step-grandson, and great-grandchildren. Elwood was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 74 years, Patricia Pearl (Nisley) Dethloff, his brother Linwood W. Dethloff, his daughter Janet (Dethloff) Green, and his grandson Zachary R. Green.

A graveside service will be held at a later date to honor Elwood's life and legacy.

So very sorry for your loss. I´m so glad I was able to see Pat and Al a few years ago when I was in Michigan for my mom, Velma Smith´s, funeral. Mom knew them forever and just loved them. Hugs and prayers to the family.
