Emily Hobart Hall

July 20, 1925-October 29, 2022

Salt Lake City, UT-Emily Hobart Hall was a remarkable woman who was passionate about life. She shared her love for nature and her spirit of adventure with family and friends. As a community activist, she was a steadfast advocate for environmental conservation and land-use planning.

She was born in Evanston, Illinois, to Dr. Marcus and Helen Hobart. Her paternal grandfather was a Methodist missionary in China and her maternal grandfather was a U.S. Congressman. She graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in Zoology which laid the groundwork for her environmental activism. She married Dr. Charles Chauncey Hall in 1946, the beginning of 76 years together.

In 1956, she moved with her husband to Salt Lake City. Part of the incentive for their move was reading a New York Times article about the beauty and deep powder skiing at Alta. This proved to be a suitable move for Chauncey who practiced orthopedic surgery, and survives her. They have five children (Helen Kolff, David Hall, Lucy Leaver, Janet Hall and Marcus Hall), twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

As an avid outdoor enthusiast and athlete, she enjoyed skiing, horseback riding, tennis, sailing, and was an accomplished ice skater earning her gold level in the solo dance category.

Emily loved meeting new people and exploring distant landscapes, being able to visit all seven continents. She kayaked remote wild rivers in Alaska, snorkeled in Palau, walked among penguins in Antarctica, trekked in the Himalayas, and avoided hippos and crocodiles along the Omo River in Ethiopia.

Part of every summer was spent in Waupaca, Wisconsin, at her family farm surrounded by spring-fed lakes, forests, streams, and wetlands. Emily worked to protect this land in perpetuity through a local land trust.

She was an advocate for environmental issues such as land use planning, water and air quality. She was active in the League of Women Voters of Utah, serving as President for two years. One of Emily's strengths in the League was her ability to attract volunteers in the environmental area and harness their energies. She was a board member of the Utah Environment Center, Jordan River Parkway, Antelope Island Foundation. She also served on the Salt Lake County Water Quality Citizen Advisory Committee, the Governor's Advisory Task Force on Transportation and Air Quality, and Salt Lake County's Canyon Master Plan Citizen Advisory Committee. She was appointed by Governor Scott Matheson to the Utah State Air Conservation Committee where she served for ten years. Emily ran as a Democratic candidate for the Utah House of Representatives in 1976.

We are grateful to her good friends, and those who helped her during the end of her life, including Intermountain Hospice. A celebration of her life will be held on December 29th.

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts." -Rachel Carson

Emily was one of my role models, adding her spice for life, dedication to husband and family, and infinitely long list of interests to a reservoir of possibilities, which I probably consulted as I went about living. I always loved that she continued to ride horses when she seemed frail and might have been afraid. She was not. The last time I saw Emily and Chauncey was some eight years ago, when she had driven them over the Wasatch by back roads to visit in Heber. I just think she was great!

The first time Dick & I met Emily: Longmeadow Farm. She had just finished vigorously banging pots & pans at a gaggle(?) of chickens, in an attempt to persuade the "interlopers" to cross Rural Road. That was July of 1981. That meeting began a 40+ year experience of falling in love with Waupaca, and more specifically, that slice of Heaven that Emily and your family have known & loved forever. We have cherished and celebrated family gatherings & celebrations (with 4 generations!!!), and just generally basked in the beauty & tranquility that Emily (& family...) have worked so faithfully to cultivate and preserve. All 3 of our daughters have their own personal memories of Emily and Chauncey. (and their dog, "Sirloin.") My oldest daughter, Carly, actually took her first steps at the "Hi Ho Hum"!!! I also "suspect"(???) we are likely the only family to experience a huge limb caving in the cottage roof during a tornado, while on their vacation week? (But I digress). My daughter, Carly, became a naturalist. She refers to her times in Waupaca, and her "tangental" conversations with Emily, as "foundational", in her life. The entire Mross Family offers our most sincere sympathies in your great loss. We likewise join you (in Spirit) in celebrating the remarkable life of Emily. She made a difference. She was a gift "to the common good." -Julie & Dick Mross; Appleton, WI-

Emily was a giant, and full of energy. She resuscitated Wasatch Clean Air Coalition around 1996 when our Chair resigned. She was a member of the Air Quality Bureau of the Utah Department of Health in the 1990's, before the creation of the Division of Air Quality in the mid 90's.
She represented Utah Air Conservation Committee on the task force that produced Gov. Bangerter's 1991 GOVERNOR'S CLEAN AIR COMMISSION Report with recommendations on how to clean Utah's air. Over her long life, Emily made many, many effective contributions to the common good. I was very privileged to work with her on air quality. I will miss her vibrant presence in the world. Sincerest condolences to her family.

I have had the good fortune to consider The Halls, not only dear friends, but as close and good as family. The many years of back pack trips to Southern Utah, a visit to the beautiful Wisconsin farm, as well as our many exciting ventures to the cabin in Wyoming are experiences that I will never forget. Truly life shaping adventures! Emily was my best horse riding buddy, an occasional sunny, bluebird day, ski pal, a great hiking, paddling, and just all around favorite friend! She was a hard one to keep up with.... right to the end. Her life was beyond inspiring and mostly, she was just plain fun! Thanks to the Halls for sharing Emily and this journey called life, with me, my best times were spent with you all! Love, hugs, and condolences to the family, Em is sorely missed.

What a gift to see Chaunce' and Em' on that bluebird morning, December 21, 2021. Both are amazing inspirations. I was lucky enough to see them multiple times thereafter.
