Emily Mayer

GASTONIA - Emily Dorrance Mayer, 92, moved to her heavenly home on June 29.

Emily was born on Oct. 23, 1924, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Dr. George Morris Dorrance and Emily Burrows Fox Dorrance.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Henry Christian Mayer IV; son-in-law Charles Kenneth Cheezem Jr.; brother, George Morris Dorrance, Jr.; and nephew George Morris Dorrance III.

She was a lover of photography and enjoyed drawing and swimming. She attended Bennington College and the University of Pennsylvania. She enjoyed playing tennis and summering in Gloucester, MA, and Pocono Lake Preserve, PA. She was very active in church. For many years she served in her local Christian Science Church. In her later years, she was an active member of Gaston Community Church where she greeted all and faithfully handed out the Sunday church bulletins. She attended Community Bible Study and loved studying the Scriptures. She will be greatly missed by her family, church family, caregivers, and friends.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she is survived by her daughter Emily (Lee) Mayer Kendrick and husband John; daughter Anne Mayer Cheezem; son Douglas Louis Mayer and wife Linda; daughter Sallie Mayer Hendrick and husband Harlan. She is survived by eight grandchildren: Kelsi Mayer, Chelsea Sheasley and husband Chris, Meridian Mayer, Brandon Hendrick and wife Megan, Brianna Olsen and husband Karsten, Taylor Hendrick and wife Martie, Justin Hendrick, and Wes Kendrick; and 2 great grandchildren Annabelle and Natalie.

She is also survived by her niece Mary Irwin Dorrance, and a large extended family of Dorrance, Huebner and Zug relatives.

For many years several individuals, Gaston Community church members and the Covenant Village family cared for Emmie and the family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude.

Celebration of Life Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday July 9 at McLean Funeral Directors at 700 S. New Hope Road, Gastonia, NC, with Pastor Mark Tankersley officiating.

Her family will receive friends on Saturday July 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at McLean Funeral Directors.

She will be buried at Laurel Hill in Philadelphia, PA, next to her loving husband.
