Emily Shain Obituary
Emily Shain, 23, of Wrentham, MA, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2020. Born in Newton, MA, she was the beloved daughter of Randall and Cynthia (Chlebanowski) Shain.
Emily was a bright star who shined too bright to last forever but that light was thankfully able to shine on many people, especially those that were also struggling in the dark. She had her own struggles to work through but what really gave her joy and a sense of purpose was to help others find love and acceptance in a world that is increasingly unwilling to show compassion and understanding to those they’ve deemed unworthy. She struggled, as many do, but had the bravery to share her stories and offer support to others so they would not feel alone also.
Emily worked as an Aquatic Supervisor at the Canaan YMCA. She took pride in her work and got the most joy from helping the kids. She loved family, friends, animals, the quietness and beauty of nature and, ironically, a good horror movie! She was a passionate learner and had many interests including, reading, photography, drawing, outdoor exploring and Patriots football. Astronomy was her biggest passion, however. She loved the time spent looking at the stars and taking advantage of early opportunities to volunteer at observatories in Cambridge and Nantucket.
Emily didn’t hesitate to take the initiative to better herself. We couldn’t be prouder of her and only wished we could have seen the extraordinary things she would have certainly accomplished. They say that the darkest nights produce the brightest stars. Emily, we will forever be grateful for you being the light of our lives. We will miss you dearly.
And one additional thing that Emily would want us to say. If you are struggling with mental illness and/or substance addiction, please do not give up. Seek help when you need it and help others when you are able. You are not alone, and you are worthy!
Besides her parents, she is survived by her loving sister, Melanie Shain, her grandfather, Cleveland Shain, grandmother, Helen Chlebanowski, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends who will miss her dearly. She is now in the company of her late grandmother Linda Shain and grandfather, Joseph Chlebanowski.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider donations to NAMI.org, a local animal shelter, or simply perform an act of kindness.
Emily’s Service will be Video Live Streamed Sunday, May 31st at 4:00PM, right here on her obituary page.

Your strength and courage has always inspired me to never give up. Your joy for living was contagious. I am so thankful for the time I got to spend with you even though it was cut way too short. I will never forget all of our amazing and adventurous childhood memories together. I will never forget the times we laughed until we cried and stayed up super late having heart to heart conversations. We always reassured each other that wed be there for each other through anything and everything. That will always be true. We related to each other in so many ways and I am forever grateful for the bond that we share. You always made me feel so loved and accepted. Youre my cousin but youre actually my sister from the same star. Theres not a doubt in my mind that we will be reunited someday. Until then I will try my best to live life to its fullest and enjoy the ride and all that life has to offer. I know thats what youd want. You were the one that sparked my interest in astronomy and the universe so I will strive to keep learning about them and I will think about you every time I look up at the stars. Emily was truly one of the most beautiful people ive known, inside and out. She was so funny and goofy. Such a beautiful service for such a beautiful soul. Emily was truly one of the most genuine people you could ever meet. She loves to laugh and make others laugh. I cant even explain how many times Emily made me and so many others truly feel like what we had to say was important. She listened with her heart and always pushed you to think critically. I miss Emily (Emmy) so much. Ive learned so much from her. She was one and only best friend, we were roommates too. I love you so much em, when I was in the dark she brought me sunshine and light she made laugh all of the time.. this isnt over Im going to keep fighting the fight for you Emily because I know thats what youve wanted me to do. We were inseparable we even worked in the same building and she would ask me to bring white macadamia cook and some coffee with Splenda.. when we went to the dutchess county fair we even rode the biggest ride there ever was.. i have a lot of other memories, late night nights with secrets, laughter and movies and so many other ones that I will hold onto forever and cherish the moments we did. I only knew Emily through conversations with her father Randy and I know he loved her with all of his heart and he was always thinking of her through hard times and good times. Randy was so happy that Emily was doing much better. This makes her passing so much the more tragic. I know she is in a better place and send my condolences and sympathies to the Shain Family.

Emily had such a beautiful soul and fit so well in the Y community. She brought kindness and cheerfulness to the Y. Always doing her best to do the best job possible, I cant say that I can think of a time that she didnt welcome me with a big smile and warmth. She was so well liked and such a wonderful edition to the Canaan Family YMCA staff. She brought joy to our lives. We felt so lucky to have find us. We are heartbroken she wont be with us when we re-open the Y. She will be missed so very much.

Sending all my love to your family during these times. Though we drifted over the years, I will always treasure the childhood we spent together - the play dates had while Girl Scout activities were being planned, the post-meeting happy meals shared, the art and crafts and of course endless giggles.
While the pull of the stars Em was so fascinated by was too strong to keep her here with us, I pray that she is finding comfort resting among them. I am so sorry for your loss.

I remember Emily who was friendly with my son Henry in junior high. I remember dropping him off at pool parties in West Wrentham ( a very long steep driveway) I also remembered Henry talking about how much Emily loved astronomy and knew so much about the stars & planets.
Emily wrote a beautiful note to us when he passed away 3 years ago this June.
Emily s kindness will never be forgotten.
Wherever a beautiful soul has been there is a trail of beautiful memories.

Praying for your family, Emily. Ill never forget the one time we had a sleepover at your house and went to Napper Tandys together.. or the classes we shared together at BCC! Those were so fun because you lightened up the class and always argued your point to everyone! You were so kind and loving and the easiest person to make happy!
