Being incorporated into the conglomerate that was our circle of friends, Eric was introduced to me and referred to as "Cog." It wasn't until many years later I realized that wasn't really his name! What I did realize immediately, however, was that he was a kind, genuine, thoughtful member of our group.

While surrounded by big personalities at events like birthday parties or weddings, Cog could always be found sharing laughs with people and making them feel welcome. He was quick with smiles and hugs and genuine affection and appreciation for all those he loved.

His strength and determination throughout his illness were nothing short of inspirational, and we were all blessed to have more time with him.

He will be greatly missed.

Some people are more than just friends.

I met Eric (affectionally nicknamed as COG) in fall of '96 when we pledged the same fraternity in college. Humble, reserved, and amazingly fun, we hit it off immediately and became close friends and brothers.

Many of our same life events became intertwined: graduating college, sporting events, new jobs, concerts, moving houses, relationships...you name it and we did it together. We stood up in each others' weddings and shared countless memorable nights having the time of our lives. Whether we saw each other every day, every couple of weeks, or every couple of months, I could always count on his smile, sense of humor, and loyalty each time we met.

It is absolutely devastating to lose such a good man. He was an amazing husband, father, brother, son, friend...the list goes on. While we all try to make sense of the senseless, I am at least comforted that he is no longer in pain and he will leave a legacy within his wonderful sons and within our collective memories.

My thoughts are with all the members of his family; I have known them for almost 30 years now and wish I could do or say something to show how much he meant to all of us and the impact he had on our lives.

I am a better person for knowing Eric and, while my heart is broken, I am thankful for getting the chance to spend as much time with him as I did.

I will miss you, my friend. Thank you for your friendship & love and I'll see you on the other side.

My first memory of Eric was probably of him at the WIU Twin Pikes house where they hosted an interest party in 1996. I wasn't shy, but I was all sorts of nervous not knowing anyone, and Eric was one of the first guys to make we feel welcome. Eric was always present at all events, and while sometimes more reserved than most of us idiot 19 year olds, he was always a lot of fun, and always a dedicated friend for nearly 30 years. I wish we had another 30 with him, but God's plan is for us to see him later on someday in Heaven it seems. Gonna miss that "COG"! phiphi with love, Brother.
