Eric Kessler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 20, 2025.
Eric Kessler, 65, of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away on May 15, 2025, in his hometown, surrounded by loved ones.

Born on September 29, 1959, in Charlottesville, Eric spent his life deeply connected to the community and the natural beauty of the region. He graduated from Charlottesville High School in 1977, where he was widely known for his remarkable talent as a baseball pitcher. His skill shone through in local leagues such as Piedmont Little League and the Lambeth League, earning him recognition throughout the area. Although an arm injury during high school ended his competitive aspirations, Eric continued to play in local organized games and remained passionate about the sport throughout his life.

Following high school, Eric pursued higher education at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where he earned his degree. Despite facing significant challenges-including a serious automobile accident early in life that left lasting effects-Eric demonstrated unwavering resilience and strength. His determination inspired those around him as he continued to live with courage and grace.

Eric had a deep love for the outdoors. He found peace and joy in camping trips to the surrounding mountains and cherished visits to Lake Sherando Park with friends. An avid observer of the night sky, Eric spent countless hours stargazing through his telescope and visiting local observatories. His appreciation for nature extended to animals as well; over the years, he cared for many beloved pets-both cats and dogs-and delighted in watching wildlife visit his home.

His Christian faith was a cornerstone of his life. Raised from early childhood in the Church, Eric attended Hinton Avenue Christian Church through his teenage years. He held fond memories of fellowship events in the Social Hall and meaningful experiences with the Methodist Youth Fellowship group (MYF). Later in life, he became deeply involved with Maple Grove Christian Church, where he contributed to the youth group and found enduring friendships and spiritual growth. The church community was a vital source of strength and joy for him.

Eric faced one of his greatest challenges with extraordinary bravery when he was diagnosed with cancer approximately a year ago. Entering hospice care on Ivy Road, he was given only a short time to live but defied expectations with remarkable tenacity. His brother Rob Kessler and faithful friend Ann Turman remained by his side throughout this journey. Their presence brought comfort during his final days, as did the compassionate care provided by the hospice staff-whom Eric's family describes as "angels on Earth."

Eric is lovingly remembered by his brother Rob Kessler; his devoted friend Ann Turman; her brother Bill; and all those who were touched by his strength, kindness, and enduring spirit. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Lee Kessler and Winnie Norvelle Kessler.

May Eric's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and serve as a lasting reminder of resilience, faith, and love for life's simple wonders. A service may be planned for the future.

Sorry to hear about Eric, knew him from our school days and we also worked together as carpenters for a short time afterwards

I was sorry to hear about Eric´s passing. It has been many years since I had seen Eric, but do still remember a particular pickup football game where he broke my (attempted) tackle, like a wave crushing a sandcastle.
May God comfort you during this difficult time.
