I am so very sorry for your loss. He always seemed like a very nice person, and I enjoyed watching Ian and Erick throughout the years of school together. Prayers for your family.

We are so sorry for your loss. Erick’s free-spiritedness was admired by our son, Nick, especially in his adventures since high school. Although he was taken from this world much too soon, his spirit will surely live on.

Erick was my first college friend. Whether it was going for a walk around campus, eating yogurt and granola in the Burge dining hall, or late night study sessions in the Stanley lounge, Erick always radiated happiness and light. He inspired me in so many ways and I’m so thankful to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

March, Ron and Laurel: We remember Erick as a beautiful, warm and happy boy and although many years have passed since we last saw your family, we know he was also a remarkable and special man. He touched the lives of Alex and Evan so deeply. We will keep him and you in our hearts and thoughts.

Erick was an extremely special human that brought so much joy to everyone he met. Everyday we hope to honor Erick by seeking joy and adventure in nature while staying true to who we are. I have so many fond memories of seeing Erick and Laurel every Christmas, playing games, hearing their life updates and growing up alongside them. He is missed and so very loved. I was lucky enough to have Erick on my dorm floor freshman year. I have nothing but fond memories of Erick and will remember him for his kindness, humor, and passion for the outdoors. I’m sending all of my love and prayers to everyone who was fortunate enough to know and love Erick.

Freshman year, our daughter Liz introduced me to a charming young man as we all walked down the 2nd floor of Stanley Hall together and they exchanged easy and funny banter. She spoke very highly of Erick and considered him such a good friend. We are so sad to hear this news. He will forever be in our hearts, forever loved.

What an extraordinary young man! I wish I had had his sense of adventure at 20; his free spirit unhampered by social norms. His eye for nature photography reveals a gentle soul; his smile - a deep kindness. I am grateful to have met him. I am sad that I did not know him better.

I remember when your family moved to town. Erick joined my 3rd grade class. He was a great addition . . . kind, respectful, an avid learner. He fit right in and was well-liked. He was such a great guy. My sincere sympathy to your family.

I was Erick’s kindergarten teacher in Pella. I have fond memories of a sweet little boy. He was one of a small group of students the kindergarten teachers took to a school board meeting to share our curriculum with board members. My sincere condolences on your loss.

Though I didn't know Erick very well, he was always a friendly face to see at the UI climbing wall and around Trowbridge Hall. He will be extremely missed.

Though we didn't know Erick well, we always enjoyed watching him (and Ron at times) work on his van this past year. He was always pleasant to visit with, and enjoyed sharing some stories about his trips. You guys are in our thoughts.

Erick has been an inspiration to our Natalie, a Decorah graduate and herself a student at U of I, studying environmental and political sciences and exploring her own path of seeing America. After viewing some of his photos, I surmise he really loved photographing nature, especially the mountains.

You probably do not know me, but I work at a business in downtown Decorah. I had the opportunity to see Erick many times in the downtown area and every time he had a smile and was always kind. I am so sorry for your loss. Please know Erick left an impression on me, just a stranger who passed him on the street-Thank you for giving the world the opportunity to know Erick.
