Harley Sylvester Hopkins, 93, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. He was born January 4, 1921 in Wake County to the late William Robert Hopkins and Lila Mitchell Hopkins. Harley served his country in the US Air Force during WWII, flying B-24 Bombers. He later worked with Dillon Supply where his career spanned over 38 years. Harley was active in the Wendell Community, serving as a former commissioner, a devout member of the Wendell Rotary Club where he was a named a Paul Harris fellow, and was often seen playing a round of his favorite sport, golf. He was a faithful and devoted member of Wendell Baptist Church serving in many capacities, as long as his health permitted.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, January 25, 2014 at Wendell Baptist Church, 3651 Wendell Blvd., Wendell, NC 27591. Burial will follow at Greenmount Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive relatives and friends prior to the service from 1:00 to 1:45 pm at the church and other times at the home of F.L. and Anne Hopkins, 1600 Hoppy Hill Road, Knightdale.

Harley is survived by his daughter: Donna Ruth Hopkins; brothers: R. B. Hopkins and F. L. Hopkins, both of Knightdale; sisters: Garnetta H. Pearce of Wendell and Mildred H. Wall of Garner; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Ruth Britt Hopkins; daughter: Sandra Hopkins; 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to N.C. State Veterans Home, 214 Cochran Avenue, Fayetteville, N.C. 28301.
