Erika Schmidt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 21 to Feb. 22, 2023.
Erika Sarah Schmidt passed away suddenly on December 28, 2022, after suffering a brain hemorrhage the previous day. She was 73.

Erika had retired just three months earlier as the Director of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute, an elected position she held for nine years. There she blazed a trail of firsts: the first woman, social worker, child psychoanalyst, and non-physician to serve as Director in the Institute's eight-decade history. While at CPI, she expanded sliding-scale clinical services, modernized the curriculum, and introduced a highly successful distance-learning component to train psychoanalysts worldwide (even teaching her children to use Zoom all the way back in 2017). Erika was, in the words of one colleague, a "combination of visionary and steam engine." She was a similarly committed educator, evidenced by her 35 years of teaching and two dozen publications on child development, child analysis, and the history of psychoanalysis. With particular concern for the mental health of children, she contributed to a variety of child and adolescent initiatives, including a program providing group therapy to elementary school students exposed to violence and another providing psychotherapy to youth in foster care.

Born in Manhattan to Dorothy and Lester Karg, an interior designer and an engineer, Erika was raised in the distinctive Village Creek community in Norwalk, Connecticut. A Hyde Parker for more than 47 years, she first moved to the Midwest to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology at Northwestern University. After earning a Master of Social Work degree from Simmons College in Boston, she returned to Chicago to begin her social work career, first at the Juvenile Protective Association and later at the Institute for Clinical Social Work. She also earned a Master of Arts in the Humanities from the University of Chicago as well as three Certificates in psychotherapy and psychoanalysis from CPI, and she maintained a patient-centered private practice throughout her long career.

Erika was always in the middle of at least a few books, including some for her book club of 37 years, and at least a few online Scrabble games with a roster of friends and relatives. While endeared to routine-whether Saturday morning at the 61st Street Farmers Market or a bowl of ice cream for dessert-she was also eminently curious and was a regular theater goer, museum visitor, and world traveler.

Erika was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Elissa. Missing her greatly are her children Jeremy and Emily (Oliver), her sister Nancy (Bruce), and numerous family, friends, and colleagues.

Contributions in her memory may be made to the Psychotherapy Action Network (https://psian.org/donate) and The Endowed Child Services Fund at the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute (https://tinyurl.com/ECSF-Donate, please select the fund name at the bottom of the form). A memorial is being planned for later this year.

I remember Erika very fondly from a trip we took to Mexico. We each took leave from college for winter term and enjoyed travel through Mexico City and Oaxaca. She and I had graduated in the same class from Brian McMahon High School in Connecticut and were both ready for a break after a couple of years of college. It was my first adventure out of the U.S. and a great travel memory.

During the brief time I got to know Erika on the Development Committee at PsiAN, I found her to be a very measured person, who was considerate, reflective, poised--a natural leader. I had assumed I would enjoy her wry smile and commanding presence as long as we shared our strong commitment to PsiAN. When I heard of her passing I was shocked and crestfallen. It still seems so surreal to me that she is gone....

Erica was such a lovely woman. As a teacher she introduced me to many things that i still use some 25 years after. She had a wisdom and kindness that will undoubtedly live on in many of us.

Erika was my consultant at the Institute For Clinical Social Work; I saw her every other week at the U of C counseling service. She challenged me. She created that I would think about children and the analytic process. I would hit the sidewalk 20 years ago and consider how lucky I was! My condolences to the family and deepest respect for Erika. Erika was truly one of a kind. During my all-too-brief relationship with her through PsiAN, I also learned of our JPA connection - and her actions that helped JPA remain in the child therapy space (thank you, Erika!).
I learned so much from listening to her thoughts and ideas, especially about why society needs to rethink our relationships with children and the ways in which we can all build stronger relationships with our youngest members.
Erika was a role model to all she met. Beyond her role as an educator, her work influenced the lives of thousands of children for the better. The energy she devoted to her work, her family and friends is not lost - it is just transformed. What a truly wonderful legacy!

It's my honor and luck that I met Erika. She is a model for me as an analyst and instructor. I love her and miss her.
The first time I met Erika is at an annual meeting of the China-America Psychoanalysis Association in 2018, in Chengdu, China. She inspired me to understand my patient deeply in the case conference, which encouraged me to apply the PEP in CPI. How I appreciate her innovation of open the distance training program for international students which needed her wisdom, creation, and braveness to challenge the tradition. In 2020, I became a candidate in CPI and enjoyed her class so much. I was impressed and struck by her wisdom and being familiar with so many books and papers. I was touched deeply by her stableness and tenderness which made me feel supported and understood.
I miss Erika and she will be in my heart forever.

Dearies ~ Nancy, Jeremy & Emily,
As I've shared w/you ~ I'm both saddened and so very sorry. I knew Erika to be fairly quiet and reserved so luv that she was referred to as a "stream engine"! And the fact, that she had just recently retired! Your choice of photos captured her essence right on ~ esp luv the one w/the hat as it shows the sweetness. XO's
