Erna Fischer of Calgary passed away peacefully on August 24, 2013 at the Rockyview Hospital. Erna was born in Middle Lake to immigrant parents who instilled in her a sense of pride, independence and confidence to take on life and enjoy it. Despite modest beginnings, Erna and her husband Fred moved to Calgary in 1953 where they raised their three children with great love, instilling in them the importance of honesty and integrity. Erna was a stay-at-home mom whose focus was on her children and who built strong friendships with her neighbors in Altadore and within her church congregation, initially at Messiah Lutheran Church and later at First Lutheran Church. When Fred passed away in 1971, Erna ventured out of her familiar setting at home to become a "coffee lady" at Dome Petroleum, a job she loved and where she developed a number of long lasting friendships. This opportunity reinforced for her that she was a capable and independent woman who could look after her family on her own. Erna's passions over the years were for her family. Being a grandmother was one of the most joyous aspects of her life. She built strong friendships with all of her grandchildren, having them sleep over, baking cookies together and always being there with gentle words and kindness. Erna will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter Elaine Henry (Don) of Bragg Creek, and her two sons Charlie (Joanne) and Brian (Tammy) of Calgary; her grandchildren Kristy and Robbie Henry, Kate and Lindsay Fischer and Joel, Ian and Eric Fischer; and four sisters Hertha Tweidt of Wadena, SK, Esther Hall (Murray) of Los Altos, CA, Lucille Kerr of Calgary and Alice Kirsch of Middle Lake, SK. In accordance with Erna's wishes, a private Graveside Service will be held.
