Mr. Ernest A. Dale, age 83, passed away on January 28, 2019 following a courageous battle with cancer. Ernest lived in Hamilton for the past 56 years with his beloved wife Jane (Cheever) Dale with whom he shared 59 years of marriage. Ernie was born at his family home in Wakefield, August 28, 1935, one of seven children of the late Frederick A. Dale and Marion L. (Drake) Dale. He was raised in the Greenwood section of Wakefield and graduated from Wakefield High School. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army as a helicopter and airplane mechanic. Following his service, he attended Northeastern University on the G.I. bill graduating in 1961 with his B.S. Degree in Chemistry. Forever the scientist, Ernie had a long career at GTE Sylvania, Lighting Division as a phosphor chemist, where his patent contributions were notably recognized. Always active, Ernie had many civic interests and hobbies. In the 1970s he served as Chairman on the Hamilton Board of Health and was Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 35 where he shared his love of the outdoors on camping, hiking, and canoe trips, while mentoring several scouts to attain their Eagle badges. A true Jack of all trades, Ernie enjoyed all aspects of building and mechanics, exhibiting true Yankee ingenuity in all his projects. He spent much of his retirement years expanding his home and engineering his beautiful koi ponds and gardens. In addition to his wife, Ernie is survived by his two daughters, Sherie Parr and her husband Warren of Danvers, and Nancy Dale of Billerica as well as two grandchildren, Matthew Osberg and Christina Parr. He was predeceased by his sisters, Louise Chapman and Joan Arsenault, and is survived by his brother, Arthur Dale and his sisters, Helene Gerry, Cynthia Kroon, and Debbie Pomerleau, their spouses and several nieces and nephews. Honoring his request, there are no visiting hours and his burial will be private at Puritan Lawn Memorial Park in Peabody. Assisting the family with the arrangements is Peterson-ODonnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple St., (rte 62) Danvers. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Sophia Gordon Cancer Center, One Essex Center Drive, Peabody, MA 01960. In expressing my condolences I wanted to be brief and yet convey my memories of Ernie. In reading the other condolences I found that it had already been said by Margaret MacKenney better than I ever could have.

Dear Jane and family,

Our deepest sympathies to you all.

Ernie was a truly exceptional person. Whatever he did, he was totally involved. I first saw that when I came to work with him at Sylvania and he was working on a new spray dry process for lamp phosphors. I always admired his scientific and engineering abilities. In later years it included so many projects at home. It was always fun to learn about them and see photos of the progress on his phone.

We will miss him.

I worked with Ernie at Sylvania when I was a co-op student at Northeastern. A class guy with a good sense of humor. One of the best guys I ever worked with. Rest in Peace, Ernie, and thanks.

My condolences to his family.

Jane,
Joan and I extend our sincere condolences and wish you peace and strength going forward.

I worked both for and with Ernie for over 30 pleasant years. With Ernie you got Ernie, a totally genuine person. Ernie once told me that one his goals was to 'learn some one new thing every day'. Well, he obviously succeeded in this goal as he always had something new in the realm of the sciences and every day life to share. I very much enjoyed talking 'science' with him in the many times that we spent, one on one, after one of our group Old Timers Luncheons had broke up for the day.

Ernie was a somewhat quiet person in demeanor, but oh so knowledgeable, 'still waters run deep'. Ernie was one of the good people that I shall always remember.
