Ernest Michael Hannig

It is with profound reverence, we announce the passing of Ernest Michael "Ernie" Hannig, 69, on February 22, 2024. Born into this world on November 22, 1954, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Ernie lived a life marked by dedication to education, and a passion for the natural world.

Ernie's academic achievements began with his graduation from St. Michael's Catholic School and continued at Seton Hall Preparatory School. He pursued higher education at Seton Hall University, where he obtained a BS and MS in Biology, culminating in a PhD in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at Rutgers University in 1985.

Ernie's professional journey was one of admirable commitment to the sciences. Following his postdoctoral tenure at the National Institutes of Health, his career continued as a faculty member in the Biology Department at the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), where he was a mainstay whether it be sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with countless students or supporting the academic program through his committee work.

His love for the great outdoors was unmistakable. Ernie found solace and joy in hiking, kayaking, and exploring the roads less traveled on his motorcycle. His appreciation for life's simple pleasures were an inspiration to all who knew him.

Ernie's memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Barbara Freeman Hannig; his son, EJ Hannig; his siblings, Mark Hannig, John Hannig, and Marian Coiley; and a community of friends and colleagues. He is preceded in passing by his parents, Ernest J Hannig and Irene Hannig.

A small private service is being planned.

Ingram Funeral Home in Quinlan, TX, has been entrusted with the cremation process. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Ernie's favorite charities. Those include:
