ERNEST MICHEL Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 9, 2016.
MICHEL--Ernest W.

UJA-Federation of New York mourns the passing of Ernest W. (Ernie) Michel, a major historic figure whose powerful story of resilience and professional leadership left an enduring imprint on the Jewish people. A Holocaust survivor, Ernie devoted himself to Jewish communal service for over six decades. In 1947, he joined the staff of the United Jewish Appeal, where he served as its executive vice president from 1970-1989 and oversaw the merger that created UJA-Federation of New York. Ernie was the chairman of the World Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors in Israel, bringing together 6,000 survivors and their families from across the world. He negotiated with the Mormon Church for the withdrawal from Church records of Jewish Holocaust victims posthumously baptized. An acclaimed author, lecturer, and visionary leader, Ernie kept his promise to bear witness and help the Jewish people worldwide. We extend our deepest condolences to Ernie's wife, Amy Goldberg Michel; his children, Lauren Shachar (Chaim), Joel Michel (Terry), Karen Daniels (Brian); his sister, Lotte Rein; his grandchildren; and the entire family. Alisa R. Doctoroff, President Linda Mirels, Chair of the Board Eric S. Goldstein, CEO

May Ernest Michel's Memory be a Blessing. I still mention his book to people pertaining to the Holocaust.
As I highly recommend his book to others. I'll have him in my thoughts as plan on attending a Holocaust

I was in Israel in June of 2017 And when was there found the country & People awesome. Wished could have told him, but think He knows.

I just came across the sad news of Mr. Michel's passing. His book was one of the first books I read pertaining to the Holocaust. I was so moved after reading the book, found his phone number & called him. He was a bit surprised but told him had read his book & really admired him. Told him would recommend his book highly. Lastly told him Thankful he was able to survive & He thought on life was incredible. He asked if I was Jewish, which I said I wasn't, but had utmost respect for my Jewish Friends & Israel. This was around 1995. I did take a trip to Poland & saw Auschwitz & remembered his book cover showed that & himself, this was in the year of 2000. Sorry so long, even though never met in person, really glad was able to speak to him briefly. Thoughts & Prayers to all His Family & Friends.

Dear Amy, I only just found out about Ernie's passing. I remember his friendship for Bill which meant so much to him. Ernie gave him a taste of life that I think he might not have had if not for that friendship. Of all Bill's friends Ernie is the one I remember with the most love because he gave so much of it. It is because of Weisel's death that I googled Ernie and was made doubly sad. My condolences to you sweet lady. I know the joy and love you shared with him was so special and you completed his life. My best memories of love are passed to you.

Ernie was a role model of wisdom, affection and courage. A most remarkable man. Words don't do him justice.
Blessed are those who knew him.

My deepest sympathy to his wife Amy and the Michel family.
