Ernie Salerno Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 8, 2025.
Tucson - Ernest "Ernie" James Salerno, loving husband, father, grandfather, friend, and respected businessman, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025, at the age of 79. Born on June 11, 1946, in the Bronx, New York, to Sara (née Ippolito) and Ernest Salerno, Ernie was the youngest of four siblings and lived a full life defined by integrity, hard work, and devotion to family.

Known affectionately by many as "Big Ern," he made his mark in the automotive industry as an owner and operator of several successful dealerships. Alongside his partners Herb and Jonathan Grant, he helped build Central Avenue Chrysler Plymouth Dodge Jeep in Yonkers, Rockland Auto Plaza in Nanuet-home to a variety of vehicle franchises over the years-and Central Avenue Nissan in Yonkers. Over the course of his career, he became a trusted and influential figure in the local business community, known for his steady leadership, sharp business instincts, and unwavering commitment to fairness.

Appointed by Governor George Pataki as the Commissioner representing Rockland County on the Board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), Ernie served with distinction throughout his tenure. In 2005, he was formally recognized for his outstanding service and named an honorary lifetime member of the Board.

Ernie's leadership extended beyond state service. He proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. In 1993, he was awarded the Israel Peace Medal by the State of Israel Bonds. He was twice named "Man of the Year" by the Rockland County Republican Party and, in 2004, received the TIME Magazine Quality Dealer Award, recognizing his outstanding business achievement and community service. From 2001 to 2007, he served as a Director of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA), receiving the Director's Appreciation Award for his commitment to the industry and its professional standards.

Ernie retired at the age of 50 and embraced life with full-hearted generosity-enjoying world travel, golf, cigars, and cooking his famous chicken cacciatore for "Salerno Sundays," a tradition he and his wife Janis created to bring together their incredible and treasured network of friends and family.

He was predeceased by his brothers Vincent and Hugo and his sister Henrietta. He is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Janis; his daughter, Jennifer Ann Salerno-Albergo (Cameron); his stepchildren, Randall Gentry (Matthew) and Ben Colonomos (Ginger); and his three cherished grandchildren: Ella, Adrian, and Miles. He also leaves behind his loving dogs, Mitzi and Sophie.

To those who knew him, Big Ern will be remembered not just for what he accomplished, but for how he made people feel-his sharp mind, generous heart, beautiful smile, and that unforgettable twinkle in his eyes that drew people in and put them at ease. His presence lit up every room, and his impact will live on in the lives he touched.

Ernie's family will honor him with a private celebration of life.

So many memories. I was just one of many car salesman and the after sale guy at Central Ave., Chrysler Plymouth. A friend of mine had an extra ticket for a World Series game between the Dodgers and the Yankees. I asked Ernie if he wanted to go with us and he said "sure" the three of us sat in the balcony and Ernie bought us beers and hotdog and we all enjoyed the game. The next day someone asked me if I had gone to the game with Ernie the night before. When I told him we did, he said you know Ernie could´ve gone to the game and sat anywhere he wanted including the owner´s box but he didn´t wanna let me down. I have many more stories, but it´s hard to type through my tears right now.

My history with Ernie goes back to the mid 70s when he was a rep for Chrysler Corporation and became a partner at Central Ave Chrysler with my dad Herb Grant. My dad and Ernie had a special relationship and I was truly honored to become part of that team and a partner with Ernie the remainder of his life. Ernie was always like a big brother to me and I will miss him terribly.

Ernie was a cherished friend to both Randy and I. We have so many wonderful memories of travel, Salerno Sundays, parties, and charity events with Janis and him. Finding good restaurants wherever we were was always one of his talents and we were lucky to be along! He was truly a wonderful man, a delightful and faithful friend and a joy to be with anytime, anywhere. We will miss him and hold our memories of him in our hearts forever.

Ernie touched the lives of so many. His kindness, laughter, and presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

In moments like these, we are reminded of the quiet power of a photograph. A single image can carry a lifetime of memories. Capturing not just a smile or a glance, but the spirit of the person behind it.

A photo outlives us.
It holds our stories, our laughter, our love, long after we've left this world.

To Ernie: thank you for the light you brought to this world. You will never be forgotten.
