I remember the first lectures given by Prof Sondheimer to the fist year Maths Students in 1952 in Huxley Building. We were introduced to the beautiful notions in vector analysis of div, grad and curl. I was 17 years old, and had got in (late) by taking the entrance exam in late September, having originally thought I would study aero engineering. Prof Tom Fink guided me to maths, a decision I have never regretted.
I lived at home in Kingsbury (Beverley Drive) with my parents and older brother. I was fortunate to be taught pure and applied maths well, and I got a State Scholarship. In RCS, Maths lecture were in the morning. There were two courses in a year, and six or so subjects lasting half a year, complete with the exam.
The inspiration given by Prof Sondheimer remains to me this day.

Ernst was my Professor from1960 to 1963 and I will always be grateful to him for his contribution to my adult life. I last saw him about 3 years ago when he was beginning to become frail but he was a joy to spend time with.
With grateful thanks and very fond memories.
