Estrella Ponsdomenech Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 8, 2010.
Estrella Ramirez Ponsdomenech was born on September 15, 1921, in Manzanillo, Cuba. Her mother, Dolores Leon was a concert pianist and her father, Jose Vicente Ramirez was a dentist, philanthropist and active political figure. She was the third of six sisters, Ena, Dolores, Hortencia, Ernestina and Cristina. Estrella moved to Havana to pursue her studies. As was the custom, she sat as chaperone on a date for her cousin Cristina and her then boyfriend Raul, whose best friend was a debonair medical student, Saul. He and Estrella were introduced and fell in love. After completing their studies, the couple married in 1947 and began their respective careers. Estrella taught kindergarten until the daughters, Ena and Adis were born, whereupon she began teaching part-time. In 1961 Estrella courageously fled Cuba with her daughters and nephew, Rafe, who were in danger of being removed from the family for communist indoctrination. She arrived in the United States with a small amount of money she smuggled out in a corsage and without knowledge of the language. Her fortitude and determination allowed her to provide for the children for months, while waiting for her husband to be permitted to leave Cuba to join her. Once reunited, the family moved to Pennsylvania. While there, Estrella learned the language, learned to drive in the snow and worked for a short time as a Spanish teacher. Once settled into the American way of life, and after her husband re-established his medical credentials, Estrella dedicated herself to her family and was a pillar of strength for her husband and was always there for her daughters, who adored and admired her immensely. She loved her two sons-in-law, Edd and Blair like the true sons they were to her. She adored her grandsons, Devin and David who always put a bigger smile on her face. She delighted in her great-grandchildren, Maritza and Jake (David's children) and loved Charlotte, his wife, like a granddaughter. Estrella and Saul were married 60 years and enjoyed a life full of family, friends and love. She enjoyed painting with pastels, playing the piano, cooking, dancing and traveling with her family and friends. Estrella will best be remembered by her perpetual smile, upbeat personality and absolute love of life.
Estrella was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Emily Hess; three older sisters, Ena, Dolores and Hortencia; and her husband, Saul. Her family takes comfort in her conviction that she will once again be reunited with the love of her life.

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful lady! Tia Estrella was always loving, understanding, and wise. She always had a smile and a loving word for everyone. I always had a special place in my heart for Tia Estrella and Tio Saul who where very kind to me and my family. They are finally together and watching over the whole family.

What beautiful thoughts of Tia - to add a little history - When I was ten years old and you and Ena were very little mom (Hortensia) sent me to study in Havana - Tia would pick me up on fridays and bring me back on sunday evening. She was the first to teach me how to use make up and how to be aware of how I looked. I will never forget how she insisted in finding the right voice teacher in Havana and took me there to be tested. Tia will always be in my heart and her smile will guide all our lives.

May she rest in peace and may all of you find comfort in the kind of woman she was.

Love you all - Chaly

To the family of Estrella Ramirez Ponsdomenech, left behind.
Of course, Adis and Ena epitomize the sadness and the vacuum unavoidable by Estrella's departure. However, all and every one of us, far and close, feel the pain and the emptiness.
I always admired her fortitude, impregnability, the strength of her mind that allowed her to face situations with calm, courage an with her characteristic smile.
Our Estrella was a peace-loving person. Our gratitude to God for the time we enjoyed her. May the Lord our God be with you all at this time of sorrow and comfort with His words: "He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty".
In His love, Oscar and Lily.

Dear Mrs. Adis and Mrs. Ena:
It is hard to find the words that might console you. It is so difficult and painful to lose a parent. I lost my mother when I was 17. No words can make it better, but in time the pain is replaced by happy memories. I had the opportunity to know dona Estrella and she always was smiling, she was a sweet woman, easy to love. I will keep her in my heart forever. my prayers are with all you at this time. May God be with you and keep you strong.
With love,
Maritza Santos.
