Eugen Mueller Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 7, 2025.
Eugen E. "Gene" Mueller, born on June 28, 1940, in Frankfurt, Germany, passed away peacefully at his home in Anderson, South Carolina, on January 1, 2025.

Gene immigrated to the United States with his family on November 1, 1956. Proudly embracing his new country while honoring his German heritage, he became a U.S. citizen and exemplified the spirit of patriotism throughout his life.

At just 19 years old, Gene achieved the distinction of becoming the youngest union journeyman printer in the United States, working in the composing room at *The Washington Daily News*. His career took an unexpected and remarkable turn when a sports editor recognized Gene's passion for fishing and hunting and encouraged him to write a sample story. That story launched Gene into a distinguished career as an outdoors editor. Over the next four decades, he wrote for three national newspapers in Washington, D.C., retiring from *The Washington Times*, where his weekly fishing report became a cherished staple for readers. Gene often reflected on how fortunate he was to be paid for doing what he loved most-fishing, hunting, and writing about it.

Gene's life was filled with adventure and camaraderie. His pursuits brought him into the company of presidents, actors, songwriters, TV celebrities, and sports figures. Yet his greatest joys came from cheering for the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Orioles and sharing his love of the outdoors with others.

Predeceased by his parents Eugen and Herta Mueller; siblings Lothar and Beatrix; wife Linda Livesay; and son-in-law Tony Jewell and his second wife Margaret Wideman. Gene is survived by his daughter Sheri Jewell; grandchildren Lindsey, Jake, and Lane; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and countless loyal readers who treasured his stories.

In accordance with Gene's wishes, no formal service will be held. Friends, family, and readers are invited to honor his memory by visiting their favorite fishing spots or hunting grounds and/or by making a contribution to your favorite State Park or through advocating for land and water preservation. May his legacy inspire joy in the great outdoors he so deeply loved.

Gene and I were friends back in the early 1960's along with another friend of Gene Terry Kevit. The three of us one evening sitting at the Mighty Moe decided to take a round trip to NY city. I can't remember why but one thing I recall was we got thrown out of a small resturant for asking for eggs and Scrapple. We had a lot of fun but I do remember being glad to get out of the city and back to the DC area, I wish we could have been closer in our later years.

My most treasured memories will be all the times we spent together fishing and all the hilarious stories he told me. That, and eating BBQ at the local southern Maryland BBQ joints.
