Eugene DeCrisci Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 3, 2024.
Sterling - On the afternoon of March 28, 2024 Eugene (Gene) R. DeCrisci, age 88, heard the summons of his mighty Creator. He was surrounded by the tender voices of his wife and children as he departed this world for the next. True to his character and in keeping with his personality, Gene chose his moment with great care and love for his family coupled with the inherent dignity and respect he desired.

Eugene was born of humble beginnings in Utica, New York on July 20, 1935. His parents, Vincent DeCrisci and Angeline (Capraro) DeCrisci Barilla, welcomed him into their family which was rich with familial love, beautiful Italian heritage, and heartfelt conviction of the importance of respect, loyalty, and hard work. As the oldest of three siblings, Gene contributed to the stability of his family in numerous ways. He began working at the young age of 14 and found great satisfaction in taking care of those he loved. Throughout his professional career, Gene was known for being a valuable asset, dependable, and intensely organized. He willingly faced every professional challenge and opportunity, first with Mohawk Airlines and eventually he retired from US Airways after 30+ years of service.

One of Gene's defining traits was his intense patriotism. He proudly served his country as an Army M-60 Bulldog tank driver with the New York National Guard. He eventually found his calling as an Army Military Policeman and served with the 107th MP Company in New York. In 1991, he served his country as Command Sergeant Major with tremendous devotion and sacrifice with the 97th Army Reserve Command during Operation Desert Storm. It was Gene's greatest desire to fight for freedom so that his children and grandchildren could live in peace.

Gene's professional successes, both military and civilian, would have been flavorless without the unconditional love and support of his wife, Johanna (Prester) DeCrisci. Gene and Johanna shared an abundant life together for over 63 years. Through great joy and intense sorrow, Gene and Johanna found an anchor in one another. Their love was unwavering, deep, and long. He found profound security in the family that he and Johanna built together. Out of their deep affection for one another, they dreamed and brought to fruition a greater life for their five children and thirteen grandchildren.

Along with constructing a life with Johanna, Gene found immense satisfaction in deep friendships. He was extraordinarily sacrificial to those he found to be loyal. He lived by a strict code of respect, honor, and dedication and for those who were on the receiving end of his generosity, it was breathtaking.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Johanna; his three children, Gina DeCrisci-Farmer and son in law, Brian; Vincent DeCrisci and daughter in law, Dana; Dana Murdock and son in law, Bob; and daughter in law, Beth; his grandchildren: Krystal, Justin and Laura, Salvatore, Vincent, Victoria, Nicholas, Adam, Serena, Eli, Johanna, Gabrielle, and Joseph; his brother, Joseph A. Barilla, Jr. and sister in law, Kathleen; his brother in law and sister in law, Alvin and Carol Owens; his brother in law and sister in law, Dennis and Juliette Giovinazzo; along with numerous nieces and nephews and countless extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Vincent DeCrisci and Angeline DeCrisci Barilla; step-father Joseph Barilla, Sr.; sons, Rocco Stephen DeCrisci and Eugene R. DeCrisci II; sister, Carmella DeCrisci; and great nephew, Brooks Miles Rorick.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Eugene's funeral service which will be held on Tuesday, April 9th at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Hope Roman Catholic Church, 46639 Algonkian Parkway, Sterling, Virginia 20165 where his Mass of Christian Burial will be offered by Father Smith. The family will receive visitors at the beginning of the mass in the lobby from 10:00-10:30am. Those wishing to express an act of kindness may make a donation in Eugene's memory to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.

The family would like to extend our deepest and most sincere thanks to the dedicated and caring staff at Sunrise at Countryside. It was an honor to witness their selfless and sacrificial expertise and we appreciate their warmth and dedication to each individual person within their care.

It is with much sadness that I read of Gene's passing. My thoughts and love go out to the family.

I first met Gene in 1985 when he and Johanna welcomed my family to the neighborhood in Elkridge, MD. In the ensuing years, he taught me woodworking, a hobby I still enjoy.
In 2001, Jeanne and I were honored with Gene as best man at our wedding.
I last saw him and Johanna in Ellicott City before they moved to Virginia. I am so glad to have spoken with him by phone last year.
God bless you, and the friends and family who love you. I could not have asked for a better friend.
