Eugene Farrell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 19, 2022.
Eugene J. Farrell, 64 of Ashburnham, MA, passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022. Diagnosed with ALS in late 2021, he maintained a positive attitude and strong Catholic faith which he carried throughout his life.

He was born on March 24, 1958 to Francis Robert ("Bob") and Kathryn Gertrude (Linehan) Farrell in Bryn Mawr, PA. After Gene graduated from St. Joseph's Prep in 1976, he went on to receive his B.S. in psychology from Boston College and later his Masters and postgraduate degree from Fitchburg State University. Gene worked as a mental health counselor for many years, retiring in 2020 from the Gardner School District where he worked for 18 years as a school adjustment counselor.

On June 26, 1982, he married Elizabeth Ann Yanelli. They met on Pleasant Bay in Chatham, Cape Cod, and shared a wonderful life together raising their three children, Daniel, Glenn, and Erin, in the small town of Ashburnham. Gene was a devout parishioner of St. Denis Church, and was involved in the community through coaching youth sports, his community work in local recycling and environmental groups, and advocating for equality and mental health access.

Gene was an eternal optimist and always saw the good in others. He was compassionate, fun-loving, and always "saw the cup as half full," even during the difficult time following his ALS diagnosis. He was a dreamer, a lover of nature, of books, live music and of Boston College football.

Gene was preceded in death by his father, Bob, his mother, Kathryn, his son, Dan, and his loving wife, Liz. He is survived by: his son, Glenn, daughter-in-law, Molly, and grand-daughters, Caela, Elyse, and Nieve, of Newburyport, MA; his daughter, Erin, son-in-law, Spencer, and grand-daughter, Avery, of Northborough, MA; his brother, Anthony Farrell of Havertown, PA; and sister, Annamarie (Farrell) Khemalaap of Boerne, TX.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 11:00 at St. Denis Church, 85 Main Street in Ashburnham, MA for all who would like to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Massachusetts Chapter of the ALS Association, 200 Frieberg Parkway, Suite 1000, Westborough, MA 01581 (https://donate.ma.als.org/give/302350/?#!/donation/checkout).

Glenn and Erin,

I am truly sorry for the loss of your dad. He was a wonderfully kind and strong man and was a loving and cherished husband to your mom, my dear lifelong friend Liz. I hope it brings comfort to know that they and Dan are now reunited.

Gene saw life as we all should, the glass half full. I saw Gene and Liz when they bought a little yellow house in Ashburnham, then always at church, and helped him sell his home and buy his dream. He was the best human being I am so proud to have known.

To you his beloved family may memories sustain you and may the presence of his many friends give you comfort. He was such an important member of the Martin Luther KIng Jr, coalition we appreciated his honesty and optimism. Rest In Peace and love, Gene. Rev. Susan Suchocki Brown

Erin and Glenn,

I'm so sorry that your dad has passed away. He was such a warm and wonderful person. We last got to spend some time with him two years ago canvassing for the election. He was so good with our kids and, like every interaction I've had with him over the years, it was just uplifting being around him. I hope he's at peace and reunited with your mom and Dan. Wishing you both lots of love and healing.

Erin and Glen,
I am so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing. Gene and Liz were two of the people it was a grace and privilege to come to know. They both shared a deep love for you, and their faith. I know that Gene was welcomed by the Lord, and right behind Him were your Mom and Brother. They now are in the peace and love of the Lord, and they are praying for you and your families that the faith they passed on to you will be your strength in the days ahead.

Dear Farrell family,
I am really at a loss as to what to say. I have been a friend of your Dad's since kindergarten.
We shared a lifetime of memories both happy and sad. Please know that you will always be in my thoughts and prayers. Your father leaves behind a rich legacy and one to be admired. I will miss him terribly and regret not having seen him before he passed. I know he was writing a book and dedicating it to my mother. He was a dear friend and a terrific father. Please accept my sincerest condolences.

Your description of Gene is what I saw a school every day. I had many of his students in class and saw what a positive impact he had on them and how much he helped them. I am lucky to have crossed paths with Gene.
