EUGENE GILES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 4 to Jul. 5, 2010.
Eugene Bert Giles 1939 ~ 2010 Our beloved husband and sweetheart, brother, father, grandfather and friend passed away July 2, 2010 in Bountiful, Utah after a short bout with liver cancer. Gene was born October 27, 1939 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Bert Thorne Giles and Sarah Carlen Giles. He was raised in Manti and Kaysville, Utah. His life was one of love and service. He graduated from North Texas State University with a double major in Math and Physics and worked for Texas Instruments and then General Dynamics in Dallas, Texas. He later transferred to Hill Air Force Base, Utah as an engineer where he developed a computer data base for parts of the F-16 aircraft. He married Glenda Wycoff Stevens March 16, 1962, later divorced. December 20, 1986 he married Marjorie Pehrson and after her death (April 3, 2006) he married Alice Gardner on March 17, 2007. His great capacity to love brought these families together as one. He gave great service to his church throughout his life, serving in the Texas Mission and later holding positions of trust in LDS wards and stakes. He served as clerk and executive secretary to many bishops and stake presidents and especially liked to teach Book of Mormon lessons. After retirement he and Marjorie served a mission (2002-2004) in Sacramento, California with the Laotian, Cambodian, Vietnamese and Hmong people. It was a highlight of their 20 years together bringing them close friends from many cultures. His 18 years of devoted and faithful temple service as an ordinance worker brought Gene many blessings. He met Alice, his second eternal companion, while working alongside her in the temple. She brought many new elements of fun and happiness to his life, and he expressed his feelings of appreciation to her daily. They were an example to all of what marriage was meant to be. See you later Gene. We all love you and will miss you. Special thanks go to the ICU unit and Aspire Hospice at Lakeview Hospital, Bountiful for their kind and professional care. He is survived by his wife Alice; sons Steve (Eve) Giles, Robert Giles, John (Sonia) Townsend; daughter Wendy (Ron) Wood; brothers Jerry (Sharon) Giles, Roy (Rochelle) Welty; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents; wife Marjorie; son Joe Townsend. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at the Park Meadows Ward Chapel, 690 N. 400 W., Centerville. A visitation will be held Tuesday, July 6 from 6-8 p.m. at Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary, 727 N. 400 E. and Wednesday 10-10:45 a.m. at the church prior to the services. Interment Bountiful City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers please donate to the LDS Perpetual Education Fund. Condolences may be shared at www.lindquistmortuary.com

Alice, we were shocked to hear of Gene's death. Bob Erickson emailed us here in Nauvoo. Gene and I go clear back to high school together; more years than either of us wanted to admit. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was sorry to hear that Gene had left us. I first met Gene in 1980 and worked with him until he retired. Gene was a great guy and I really enjoyed working with him. He was dedicated, very smart, accomplished some amazing programs and helped solved many complicated problems. Every one at work liked Gene. All the years I work with Gene I never heard anything but positive comments about him. Few of us will be able to have that said of us. Although I didn't know his family I wanted you all to know first hand how those of us who worked with Gene felt.

Aunt Alice,
We're all so sorry. I'm glad we got to see Gene, only briefly, 2 weeks ago. Our prayers are with you.

Jody and I have very fond memories of serving with Gene in the Bountiful Temple. I remember him as a quiet, self-effacing, humble servant who was always willing to do what was needed. I feel greatly blessed to have served with him. He is a great man.

Dear Sister Giles,
I was stunned to learn of Gene's sudden passing. I had no inkling of his illness. I felt his special spirit from the moment he joined our high priest group. Though your devoted companionship with Gene has been disrupted, my sympathies and prayers are with you truly.
