Dear Miriam, Scott, Beth, and Dave: I have written elsewhere at greater length about my deep sense of both loss and gratitude for Gene. Here, I just want to say that (shortly after noon, Tucson time on November 13th) I'm very conscious that Wilson has begun the memorial service in Bigelow Chapel. Since I cannot be with you I'm taking a time of silence the Holy Presence to honor my good friend Gene, imagine once again his laughter, feel again his unfailing good will toward all, and to sense a closeness to the four of you. Wilys Claire always had a special place in her heart for Gene as did I. And Mary and Steve, who likewise liked Gene enormously and felt very close to all of the Jabergs, join me from both coasts in these thoughts. Warmly, Jim Nelson

Gene was not just a co-worker and friend, but a mentor and champion for those he came in contact with. He was a professional and a gentleman through and through. We spoke at length about his travels overseas and his family, all of whom he was very proud of. He shared a lot about his life, and his openness made you feel like you were really in the presence of someone very gracious. One of the last projects we worked on together was at the Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. His commanding voice had an amazing resonance and kindness that sent chills of anticipation for those lucky enough to be present. His friendship will be held dear and his legacy of love will be passed on by all he came in contact with. Gene was a very special person.

I first met Gene when United Theological was founded. When I became Executive Director of the Minnesota Council of Churches he brought wisdom and practical knowledge to our broadcasting ministry. Gene was a good friend and colleague. We made several attempts to see each other when I moved back to Minnesota but his illness and mine prevented us from doing so. This we both regretted. His death is a loss of a good friend and teacher.

I have such wonderful memories of our work, travel, and play together. I am so sorry that i will be unable to attend Gene's memorial service tomorrow, but in gratitude, I shall lift a bourbon Manhattan (with three cherries) to his warm, gentle, creative spirit.

I first heard the mellifluous voice of Gene Jaberg when I was growing up in Kohler, WI - and he did the evening news on WHBL, Sheboygan, WI. Later I met him at Youth Camps and subsequently studied under him at Mission House and UTS. Gene preached my ordination sermon in l965 in Grace UCC, Kohler. He was and remains a marvelous talent and inspiration! Wish I could have been
present at his celebration of life on 11/13/13.

In 1999 I was studying communications at the University of Lugano, Switzerland, and through some common friends Gene was able to arrange a two months internship at CTV 15 for me. It's been the best experience of my life and I will always be grateful to him for everything he taught me. Fourteen years later I work for the Swiss Radio, I covered two Olympics games (with the third ones coming in three months), five ice hockey world championships and many other events and if I got here is also because of Gene and his teachings. I regret not having had the chance to come to visit him again since 1999... It has always been in my plans but it never happened. But I have been very lucky to meet him and I will never forget him, he was a real gentleman. And it was always great to hear with how much love he talked about his family and his job. Thank you Gene!

Your father was loved by so many and your courage, and tireless compassionate care these past years is a beautiful expression of his legacy that lives on.

One of the kindest and most gracious men I have ever met. May God bring comfort to you all.

I was saddened to hear of Gene's death. I so enjoyed him as a professor and as a person. He was so supportive and affirming of my ministry. I took his film interpretation class, and have viewed films in a much different way since. I also just recently listened to the recording of my installation service at which he spoke in 1988. He was such a kind man, and a man of integrity. I will always remember him fondly. My prayers are with you all.
