Eugene LEWCHUK Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post from May 25 to Jun. 2, 2017.
The Honourable Eugene Lewchuk
1932 - 2017
Former respected Saskatchewan Provincial Court Judge Eugene Lewchuk passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, May 11, 2017 in Vancouver while visiting family where he was lovingly cared for by his son, James and family until his passing. Born in Gorlitz, Saskatchewan to Paul and Mary Lewchuk, Gene grew up in Orcadia and attended high school in Yorkton. He received his law degree from University of Saskatchewan in 1957 after which he began his distinguished legal career practising in Regina and Kerrobert. In 1957 he married Ellen (nee Weber) with whom he raised his 4 children. He was appointed to the bench as a Provincial Court Judge in Saskatchewan in 1967, serving in Swift Current and surrounding centres. Gene moved to Regina in 1978. There he married Sharon (nee Wolfe) in 1988. He formally retired from the bench at the age of 70, but continued to work in court as a relief judge until age 75. In addition to his passion for and devotion to the law, Gene enjoyed reading, current events and also his travels to Hawaii, California and Mexico. In his younger years he was an avid tennis and badminton player. Because of his accepting attitude and interest in others he had many close friends and colleagues. He loved visiting with people who will recall many good conversations with Gene about world events, politics, and both local and personal issues. Among Gene's many and varied community actives he became a lieutenant in the Canadian Armed Reserve serving as a Cadet Leader. In recognition of his contribution to compatriots, community and to both Saskatchewan and Canada he was awarded The Medal of the Confederation of Canada in 1992, The Queen's Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 and the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal in 2005. Gene was predeceased by his parents, his sister Sylvia Stanley and cousin Roman Kroiter, who was like a brother to him. He will be dearly missed by his loving wife Sharon, his 4 children Lynne Sevior, Lisa (Chris) Hinksman, Tary (Mie Yamada) Lewchuk, and James (Karen Hefferland) Lewchuk, along with stepchildren Shawn Sulma, Chris (Sharon) Sulma and Juliana (Terry) Kipper as well as grandchildren Nicky, Emily, Georgia, Tyler, Misa, Cazzy, Alexandra, Mason, Amanda, Josephine, Colton, Alena and McKenzie, great-grandson Brayden, and his brother-in-law Wes Stanley and niece Laurel (Daniel Heslop) Stanley. Friends and family of Gene please join us in a Celebration of His life to be held on June 4, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. in Trinity Lutheran Church, Regina with reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in his memory to the Red Cross or charity of your choice.

The family won't know me, but I knew Eugene several decades ago. I have only good memories of this gentle, intelligent soul. He was both kind and caring. Condolences to his family.

Gene was a very interesting and knowledgeable man. I always enjoyed our talks when I called your home to speak to you Sharon. He always asked about family and he was very genuine. The city of Regina was very fortunate to have such a caring and thoughtful and fair judge. He will be missed by all who knew him. My sincere condolences on your loss.

When I was an adjuster in Swift Current, I had to appear to justify applying surcharges on people's driver's licences. Gene held those hearings in Ponteix and Vanguard. We would drive down together and then I had to argue in front of him. There was never any question of bias with Gene. He was a gentleman and a very revered jurist. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear of the passing of Judge E.A. Lewchuk. I will carry fond memories of him and the many stories he shared while clerking for him many years at the Regina Provincial Court.
