Eugene Mondani Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 6, 2025.
Eugene "Gene" Mondani, born on September 12, 1934, in Westbrook, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on January 29, 2025, in Palm Harbor, Florida. He was 90 years old.

Gene was the cherished son of the late Anthony and Carrabelle Mondani. He is survived by his devoted wife Lucie; his sons Glen, Paul, and Greg; his daughters-in-law Penny, Sue, and Holli; and his sisters Hilma, Nancy, Jill, and Brenda.

Gene and Lucie met in 1958 while both working at Cramer's Corp in Essex, CT. Gene was looking for an opportunity to ask Lucie out on a date. So, one day he stayed late at work and removed all the pencil sharpeners between her desk and his. That way she had to walk over and use the new sharpener he attached to his own desk. It worked. They became engaged after five weeks and were married for over 65 years, living in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Colorado, Delaware, and Florida.

Gene loved being a dad. He fixed bikes, pulled sleds back up snowy hills, drove to swim meets, got up at 3:30 on Sunday mornings for hockey practice, played pool, and even taught his kids how to throw a knuckle ball. He gave them praise at the right times and support when they needed it.

Gene led a life filled with diverse accomplishments and meaningful contributions. In his early years, he was a proud member of the United States Air Force. His professional journey was equally remarkable, encompassing roles as a minor league baseball player, assistant bear trainer, engineer, senior executive at a multinational tech company, and management consultant. Gene's varied career reflected his adaptability and drive to excel in every endeavor he undertook.

Gene loved dogs and owned many; each one his favorite. His last dog, a boxer named Rocky, liked to walk around the garage with Gene and "help" with whatever project was being worked on that day.

Gene and Lucie liked to travel with family and friends. They cruised through the Panama Canal, and Alaska, toured Europe and England, and traveled the US and Canada visiting friends and relatives. One of Gene's favorite experiences was sitting at the stern of the ship watching locks close on the Panama Canal.

A man of many passions, Gene shared a love for music with his wife Lucie. Together they were active members of the Suncoast Dixieland Jazz Society, demonstrating their commitment to community engagement and their appreciation for the arts.

Above all else, Gene valued his family. He was a loving husband and father who lived with honesty, generosity, and integrity. His marriage to Lucie stood as a testament to enduring love and partnership through life's challenges and triumphs.

Gene spent the last months peacefully at home with Lucie, feeding the ibis who came to the screen door, watching the alligators sun themselves on the lake behind the house, and reading mystery novels from the local library.

Gene's legacy is one of dedication-to his family, his work, and the many communities he touched throughout his life. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Gene was, certainly, at least, through our high school years, my father. He taught me how to play pool, how to eat calzone and how to save time.
He always supported our beat decisions with a calm confidence that we adopted. But I was always surprised at how, when he would decide to lose weight, he would drop something like 30 pounds in a week; his force of will - balanced by his love for family food - fuels me through this day.

Aunt Lucie, Glen, Paul, and Greg,

I was so sad to hear about Uncle Gene´s passing. Even though I didn´t get to see him often growing up, he still managed to be a big presence in my life. He had such a great sense of humor, and truly the best voice. I will always remember the Thanksgiving dinners in Sudbury. I´m quite sure it was there, under his tutelage, that I learned to play pool, a skill I put to use many times in college.

I found one of my favorite photos of him, at my wedding, pretending to sneak a taste of the wedding cake. I can´t prove it, but I´m quite sure he was the instigator of the line of men who also took photos "sampling" the cake, and it always makes me laugh.

I´m thinking of you all, and sending love. I hope good memories of Uncle Gene bring you smiles.

With sympathy,
Linda

Who doesn´t like onions? I don´t get it...but, I never minded serving them on the side or leaving them out of the recipe altogether because (even though it is weird to hate onions), Gene, when I blew my nose and people in the restaurant turned to stare at me (probably in my imagination), you not only said that I sounded like a honking goose...you made that sound like a compliment! I will forever cherish our batting cage time together and our plotting of how to generate client revenue or get a job, sharing deep discussions on "delta t" and process improvement. Thank you for understanding not to talk to me in the morning before I've had coffee. I am so grateful I had a "dad" to take my car to get new tires, call the exterminator, help me put up hurricane shutters, and all those sorts of DAD things. Glen is so lucky to have known you his whole life. We both miss you so very much. XXOO.

Thank you, Glen, for the update on your dear dad. I count my life's best friends on one hand. He is one of five. I worked for him. He was a marvelous coach. He opened career doors for me. Sharon and I came to love Lucie and Gene as "family." I remember Gene standing on his friend's exquisite wood-trimmed motorboat at the pier on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. He was suntanned and wore a sea captain's hat. In that pose, he reminded me of an actor in an old movie I loved: Anthony Quinn. As my "boss," he was MY beloved captain. Gene conveyed strength, firmness, vision, and compassion all at the same time. And, we love YOU, Lucie, and your fine sons. We send our most sincere sympathy at this time of your loss. Your zest for life will carry you through. With our deepest love, Darby & Sharon Checketts
