Mr. Moye was an inspiration for me as a kid with what is now known as ADHD. "John... Focus!" His class room was right next to the WJHS library back in 79' and i was in study hall when a fight broke out between me and another kid and he came to the rescue and stopped me from hurting this guy further! I'll never forget his kindness and compassion for kids and teaching. I knew he was a retired PD from Greenwich, but never knew about his millitary service.. What a wonderful person indeed. He will be missed.

Very fond memories of Eugene as a staff member of Western Jr. High, and a devoted community leader.

Dear Mrs. Moye: I regret not knowing of Eugene's passing in time for the funeral. He was a man for whom I had great respect from the time I came to teach at Central Jr. High in September, 1963. He always seemed to be able to help me with any juvenile problems while he was a police officer. He was a good father when I had both Gene & Susan in class. He stood up for me at PTA meeting when we introduced a science course in reproduction. When he became a teacher, I found him knowledgeable and helpful with background information. Whenever we met on the street, he was cheerful and ready with knowlwdge of his children. I enjoyed going to Eugene's concerts because they were good and I was sure to see Dad beaming. My wish is for you to enjoy with pride your memories of one of the most respected men I have known. I did have the opportunity to read the oral history last year. Eugene' 8th grade retired Science Teacher.

I was so saddened to hear the news of Mr. Moye's passing. We was the kindest most wonderful man and teacher... I often think of Mr. Moye and my years at WJHS with great fondness. He made learning so much fun, and he had the greatest sense of humor. Love you Mr. Moye...

Dear Rusty: I heard about Gene's death too late to pay my respects in person. Gene is in my memories, however. He was fun to work with at Western and our whole family loved it when he would drop by our house on Game Cock when he was in the neighborhood. A great guy. My family sends you and yours our best wishes.

What a gentleman and a wonderful teacher that had both class and grace with each of his students at WJHS. He is one person that I will always remember and can appreciate "his teachings" of life. It was an honor to be one of your students. Dan Tual (Stamford)

It was with great sadness that I recently found out that Mr. Moye had passed. I am a lucky person for having Mr. Moye as a teacher. I was not an ideal student but Mr. Moye always made me feel that my opinion mattered. He taught me that I could excel if I worked hard. I will remember always his "nuggets of wisdom" and his cheerful attitude. He was a great teacher and a wonderful person. Thank you Mr. Moye.

I am but another in a long line of Mr. Moye's former students. I was under his tutelage at Western Jr. High School back around 1984. He was teaching American History at the time. The classroom seats were arranged in a circle with him sitting at the key. He would start the class with a pun which he would read from a paperback entitled "PUN-ishment". As everyone before me has said, he was a big, soft spoken man who commanded attention and respect without having to demand it. We just had to love him.

To the Moye Family,
There are many teachers of my past that I don’t remember; now that the years have flown by (I attended Western Junior High in the late 80’s). Yet, I will always remember “Mr. Moye.” He was so calm and in control, which was extremely reassuring for a shy kid like me. Without saying much he had the ability to gain, and keep your respect. I’m very sad to hear of his passing but grateful to have known such a great person.

Sincerely,

Annette Combs

I hope you find comfort in knowing the lives he touched and know that heaven now has an angel looking down on us.
My deepest sympathies.

Dear Rusty, Susie, Lynette, Doreen, and Eugene,
My deepest sympathy to you and the rest of the Moye family. Gene was so kind and helpful to me throughout my teaching career at Western. I always looked forward to his daily jokes and waited for him to find his way to the Home Ec. room to help my students "evaluate" whatever they had cooked.
Western certainly benefited from his laughter and wisdom and his love of traveling brought a sense of awe and respect for all types of people and lands to our school.
"Mr. Moye" was a true Gentleman, a Man of Honor, and a wonderful roll model for all his students. His memory and influence will live on in the lives and hearts of all who passed through the doors of Western. I feel very proud and blessed to have know him.

I was sadden to hear the news of Mr. Moye's passing. As his student at WJHS he held a pivotal influence over my life. He encouraged my curiosity and enriched my education. To Rusty and the family of Mr. Moye,

I'm following so many others here with memories of Mr. Moye at Western Junior High School. Every morning before the start of the day we would sit on the desk cubbies and chat. Then the bell would go off to head to class. Mr. Moye would say "Ring, ring, ring - get off my rare, imported furniture!" Always gave us a chuckle...still does. A most respected gentleman who will never be forgotten.

With sympathy,

I am so sad to hear about Mr. Moye's passing. I was not surprised by the amount of the wonderful people who signed this guest book.
Mr. Moye was the BEST at WJHS. I always remember his jokes and his deep voice as he'd say "Hear kitty kitty".

I remember Mr. Moye. It was always a pleasure having him in class, he made learning enjoyable and fun. Mr. Moye was one of the few teachers I enjoyed, he was strict and encouraged us to learn our lessons while also making us laugh. Sending my sympathy and best wishes to him and his family.

Dear Rusty and family,

Our hearts are filled with grief and joy at news of Gene's passing. What a glorious soul he is in all the world's of God. What blessings he is receiving in the "sea of light!" It was a great honor to have known him.

Rusty, you may remember the day (39 years ago tomorrow) I declared my faith in Baha'u'llah on your green sofa in Cos Cob and when Gene came in from work and saw the boy he knew so well as a juvenile delinquent sitting there as a new Baha'i. As a Youth Officer he had been my guardian angel and I will never forget the look on his face at the moment. The last time I saw him (and you) was by divine coincidence on the Washington Mall during the 30th anniversary of the March on Washington.

Both of you inspired Dawn and me to join the NAACP and I am still a member-- eventually having the honor to serve as the Vice President of the Branch here in Randolph Co. North Carolina. (the first white man elected to that office). With deep gratitude I can say that decades of my work for racial unity and justice can also be traced back to your inspiration.

Please accept our love and prayers during this difficult time. Rusty, we hope to be in touch with you soon

To the Moye Family, Mr. Moye is a true and absolute gentleman and his heart is as big as his prescence. I dont speak of him in the past tense because Mr. Moye is a man who could never be forgotten! I remember so many years ago making his favorite foods at Dairy Queen while he would visit with my father. When he would leave after long, funfilled visits, my dad would say ''now theres a true gentleman in every sense of the word''. Im positive that his whole beloved family is so truly proud to have him as their leader in life. God bless Eugene and the Moye family. warmest regards!

I had Mr. Moye as a substitute teacher in my years in the Greenwich School system. Always a favorite. One story I remember about him is about chewing gum in the class. If he caught you chewing gum you had to give everyone else a piece of gum and we had to give him two pieces as punishment. My condolences to the children and family..a truly great man. He did have such a great presence and commanded respect. I wish you God's peace in your grief........

Dear Rusty, Susie and Gene,I will always remember our childhood days of walking to Cos Cob School from Valley Road....Susie, my sister Charlene, Gene and my cousin Joe. What fun we had playing in the orchestra. Gene you were a brillant cellist and I was honored to play with you. Mr Moye surely kept the teens in town on their toes with his tough love. He believed in the importance of second chances that were earned by hard work and respect. I can see him now driving up the hill on Valley past my childhood home in his big car with Rusty by his side. He was a man of courage who had a huge heart for the youth!! He will surely be missed. Love to all! Julia

I met him Mr. Moye a number of times through my high school years, and what strikes me most is that I will remember him as a statue of dignity. All of his words were absorbed. There are those rare souls who by just being, command respectful attention. Gene Moye was one of them. God Bless.

March 17, 2011

I knew Mr. Moye was tough, but I never knew just how tough. Juvenile officer? No wonder he had my number! He was one to be respected AND adored. I was fortunate to have Mr. Moye for a brief time at Western and I can still remember the enormity of learning what totalitarianism was. Mr. Moye didn't present it as an abstract concept, he brought it to life. I only wish I'd had a chance as an adult to reconnect. What an honor that would have been. Clearly, he lived his faith and drew sustenance from it. May his family and friends find comfort knowing how many lives he blessed. Rest Easy, Mr. Moye. You'll be missed.

How lucky we all were to be taught Government at WJHS (1974-75) by Mr. Moye! Just a few years back, I was able to chat with him briefly in town and it seemed not a moment of time had gone by. He was as humble and warm-hearted as I remembered him. May God rest his soul.

March 17, 2011

What a wonderful human being who will truly be missed and remembered by so many students that sat before him. Loved his class and loved his joke of the day - what a way to start class - by far one of my favorite teachers ever and know that from so many of our graduating class of 1987 he was theirs too. Thank you Mr. Moye for being one of the best! RIP

Thanks for your time.

Mr. Moye was my 9th grade government teacher back in 1976. He expected us to work hard, he made learning interesting, and he was incredibly fair. To the Moye Family,
My deepest condolences to you.
I never had Mr. Moye for a teacher but witnessing the respect that even the toughest kids had for him was an indication of his positive influence and integrity as a true leader. His even greater Legacy are his Children who showed the rest of us what compassion, strength and talent combined could do in the world where boundaries of color and beliefs were just beginning to fade. Thank you Mr. Moye for the impact you had on us and the world.

We all encounter individuals that make an important impact on our lives and Eugene Moye, Sr. was such a person for me. I undoubtedly am but one of many, many persons who were the beneficiary of his guidance on occasions when youthful exuberance overwhelmed common sense...

Moreover, Mr. Moye was an example to me of what a combination of hard work, determination and strength of character can accomplish in life. He,unknowingly, helped to fortify my resolve to persevere and "push through" to make something of myself despite the odds, and I am truly thankful for his positive influence.

My late father Donato had the pleasure of working with Mr. Moye at the Greenwich Police Department for many years. He always spoke highly of him as an honorable person who always spoke the truth whether or not you wanted to hear it.

My wife Patti and I are praying for the soul of Mr. Moye and the enitre family during this difficult time.

With kindness, a gentle sense of humor, and constant encouragement, not to mention his infectious smile, Mr. Moye was a very special person to me while I was growing up in Cos Cob as a friend to his son Eugene. He encouraged our musical endeavors, always welcomed us into his home and managed to make me laugh at his silly jokes. I loved his smile - it was all-encompassing. We were lucky to have had him as our role model in treating people with respect and dignity. I hope you find peace in knowing what a special person he was to so very many people. I will keep him in my heart and wish you comfort and peace and love.

To the Moye family,
I'm sorry to hear that Mr. Moye died. (That's how I always knew him -- "Mister Moye".) I remember talking to him many times at Central and at GHS when Eugene and Lynnette were students. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

March 16, 2011

I hope that Mr. Moye and his entire family realize how fully so many of us appreciate and respect them all. I have thought of you all so many times throughout the years since I left Greenwich.

As I read these tributes to Mr. Moye, I recall his commanding presence, his strength of character, his wit, his intelligence, and his grace. He inspired our awe and admiration in the classroom and, yes, he elevated our regard for law enforcement. I envy the students who had him as a teacher at Western. I can only imagine what a pleasure it would be to learn history from him.

I did not know their other siblings, but Eugene Jr. and Lynette were uniquely respected for their strength, kindness and clarity of focus though out our years in school together. I saw their success as an extension of the love, leadership and support of their parents, Rusty and Eugene.

I send my love and prayers for your well being, and my hope that you may be comforted knowing that the gentleman you knew as a brother, father and husband was revered by those who were fortunate enough to encounter Eugene James Moye Sr..

My heart is with you.

To the Moye Family,

I had known Mr. Moye for almost 55 years. When he was substituting at then Central Junoir high School he always had complete control of the classes that he taught. He made it interesting, fun, and extremely educational. He would have us so interested in the Social Studies class that we would forget about the time and would want to continue. I recall one time Mr. Moye was substituting for Mr. John Bonomo's Social Studies class for 3 days in a row. Each day Mr. Holden, Assistant Principal, came in and sat in the back of the room. Mr. Moye had us so interested in the topics that no one knew that Mr. Holden was back there. Mr. Moye moved many mountains with his love, his understanding, and his positive outlook. He was and always will be in the hearts of all the people that he has touched. He has always stood tall with dignity and respect.

Mr. Moye was one of those teachers that made a difference in childrens' lives. I was lucky enough to have had him as a teacher at Western. One fond memory I have of him: Many mornings while walking to school, he would drive by my friend and me on his way in and beep his horn and wave to us and give us his big smile. On one particular morning we were caught off guard by a huge rainstorm. By the time we got to the point where we always saw Mr. Moye, we were like two drowned rats. As we saw his car, we gave our usual wave. Much to our surprise, and great relief, he didn't wave at us this time, but pulled over. He took pity on us and gave us a ride the rest of the way to school. We were so grateful!

I have thought of him fondly many times over the years and especially of that day. God bless you, Mr. Moye and prayers and condolences to the entire family. His legacy shall live on.

Of all the teachers I had growing up, Mr. Moye was the one that left an indelible impression. He was so kind, caring and patient. Mr. Moye didn't go the extra mile for his students, he went the extra ten miles! No student left his classroom without a full understanding of the subject at hand--he wouldn't have it any other way.
What a lovely, admirable man he was. He will surely be missed by many.

I will miss my old friend Gene Moye and will always remember the years that we worked together on the Greenwich Police Force. He was a true gentleman and a good friend. My condolences go out to all of his family.

March 16, 2011

To the Moye Family,

Please accept my very deepest condolences on your loss. I remember Mr Moye from his time as the crossing policeman at the Cos Cob School on the Post Road back in the early 1950's! He was such a kind and attentive man. He liked the kids and and kept a very watchful eye out for all of us kids at Cos Cob School. I know I was warned by my father not to play on the rocks after school. On at least one occasion I did so. By the time I got home from school that afternoon, my father had been notified by Mr. Moye and I was reprimanded for misbehaving by my father!

Mr. Moye was very good-natured in the way he chased me from the rocks and sent me home! His vigilance, concern and kindness I remember to this day!

Everyone should be as watchful of the behavior of kids today as he was in his day! In those years people for, the most part, knew eachother by name and Mr. Moye was no exception!

Those attributes must have served him well as I see he proceeded to rise through the ranks at the Greenwich Police Department before going on to teach at "Western!"

You have lost a man of which to be very proud!

Remembering you Mr. Moye, a lifelong neighbor and a kind friend. You allowed all the Cantavero children and Ledge View kids to run, play and explore in your yard as small children with always kind words and a smile. As I grew older your wisdom and gentleness remained to be a true attribute to your valuable characteristic of a gentlemen for which i have never forgotten. I will miss retreiving your mail for you on days when you were unable and feel honored that you and your loving wife have long been a part of my life and my family alike! With loving thoughts and prayers you and your family are remembered!

I absolutely adored Mr. Moye. He was frequently a substitute teacher for me at both WJHS and GHS. He served as a sub in the school I now teach at and actually remembered me, and we reminisced about our times together. He was a wonderful man and I am grateful that knew him. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

To the Family of Mr. Moye, Thank you for sharing a great man with us. He was an amazing teacher. Being in his 9th grade History class was an unforgettable experience. At that age, we were not always an easy group to manage but he loved us, laughed with us, and made us feel special while he enthusiastically taught us all about the U.S. government. Mr. Moye was full of wisdom and kindness and he made a difference in the lives of many. My sincere condolences to you.
