Gene became my "summer dad" when I was a camper at Waycross and then my boss when I became a counselor. My fondest memory was when he'd participate in the skits during counselor training week.

When I served as priest at St. David's, I was privileged to work with some very fine lay leaders. I count Gene Niednagel among the most faithful, effective and spirit-led leaders I've encountered in my all travels throughout the Church. He played a major role in the life of the Diocese of Indianapolis. He helped lift up generations of young leaders as a mentor and exemplar at Waycross. In the parish, Gene provided crucial leadership in every stage of our major building renovation and expansion. Without him, that vision would not have been realized. Without his wise counsel, generosity and encouragement, my own ministry would have been far less fruitful and rewarding. Gene was the embodiment of a servant leader and a radiant expression of love. "Hi, Gene!"

I never go to Waycross without giving thanks for Gene and Donna and the Baughman's. Gene was a pillar at St. David's and when I could no longer see him at Waycross he was there at St. David's every time we visited. I will miss his quiet dedication to Waycross, St. David's and the Diocese. Well done, Servant of God!!

Was a good man to emulate and set a great standard to attempt to follow and live ones life.

Gene (and Donna) were such a fixture in my life back in the early 1990's. My first "real" job was working in the new conference center kitchen and later as the kitchen manager for the camp during my summers away from college. Gene was always a calming presence and had a great sense of humor. I still feel guilty for the only time he ever scolded me. My family managed the Lutheran camp down the road and I may or may not have helped some of our camp staff remove the dinner bell behind the kitchen and replace it with an old urinal as a prank (not to worry, we....I mean the perpetrators....placed the bell safely in the chapel where it could be found. I think I had expected him to laugh about it, but I got a "I'm so disappointed in you" lecture that I can still remember. I'm sorry, Gene! My prayers for Donna and family. Alicia (Deckard) Morey

I have such wonderful memories of Gene when I was a youth attending summer church camp at Waycross. In my eyes, Gene was the heart and soul of that place. He will be greatly missed

I did not personally know Gene, but based on the devotion Tim and Ann had for him I´m sure he was a wonderful man.
