My family and I moved out of the Saybrook Apartments on Kennett Sq in 1950. As a seven-year old, in 1949, Gene's market was one of the first places I was allowed to go to by myself. Lucky for me! He'd talk with me nicely, say how happy he was to be in America, and always give me an extra cookie!!!
His eyes conveyed a deeper message that, as a child, I couldn't decypher.
Now, 73 years later, reading about his earlier life, I get it.
Gene was ever-sharing his heart-felt gratitude, blessing us.

Dear Irene, Gene once told me finding you was the best thing that ever happened in his life. He had a very positive influence on me, I wanted him to be proud of me. He was a role model. He will always live in my memory. Thanks for being my friend. Ron Jardini

Dear Irene and Candi:
My sister, Mary Kaufman, just told me of the passing of Gene. I didn't know Gene's last name and missed his obituary. I read the obituaries each day.
I did not know that Gene was a survivor of the Halocaust. I am proud that he was able to escape and make a life in Pittsburgh. Gene was very nice to my family.
I always appreciated that he had his little store with fresh baked goods everyday. I never knew that he was up at 5:00 a.m. each morning to supply the goods for the store. My sister read the article about him and Irene. She will mail me the article.
I have many happy memories of your parents and growing up on Lawn Street. You will miss your father.
Love,

So sorry to hear of Gene's passing. So many fond memories growing up in the neighborhood and going to his store. He was always good to my grandma and allowing her to run a tab so we wouldn't do without. He was very kind. Great man. Our deepest sympathy.
