Evelyn Bishop Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 29, 2012.
Evelyn Shirley Bishop (Dempsey) of Renton, WA has finished her long and satisfying life at the age of 84. She was born to Sherman and Susan Dempsey (Smith) in June of 1928 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada. Since neither parent was from Canada (her father was American and her mother from Scotland) she moved to the United States as a child of 7 years old and lived most of her childhood in Tenino, WA. She was the eldest of 8 children, preceded in death by 4 of them – Jack Dempsey (as a small child), Earl Dempsey, Jim Dempsey, and Jean Svok. She is survived by 3 of her siblings – Betty Lohr, Florence Smith, and Gordon Dempsey. Evelyn is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
About 2 years after graduating from Tenino Union High School, she married Adron Bishop on September 25th 1948 in a lovely wedding ceremony at the Violet Prairie Grange Hall in Tenino, WA. At the age of 24 she had her first daughter, Sandra. A few years later she had her second daughter, Diane. Sandra is married to Jim Hall who has 4 sons named Leonard, David, Don, Mark and 5 grandchildren, Alex, Colin, Isabel, Kyra and Sean. Diane is married to Brian Myers and has two children, Meredith and Keith. Meredith is married to Ricardo Necochea and Keith is engaged to Miriam Salmeron.
Evelyn enjoyed knitting and crocheting, most recently making caps for chemo patients at local hospitals. Also she and Meredith spent time working on several sewing projects together. She enjoyed playing Bunko once a month with a great group of gals, often winning the prize.
Evelyn was a good wife, mother, grandmother and friend even during tough times for her – like the passing of her beloved husband in August of 2003 and more recently, her brother and sister. But, it is true to say that she touched a lot of people's hearts in her many years of life and she is worthy of being missed.
Our thanks to the caring staff at Talbot Rehab Center for all they did for Mom during her rehab stay.
A viewing will be held from 12:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday, January 3rd at Greenwood Memorial Park. Her memorial and burial will start Friday, January 4th at 11: 00am 350 Monroe Ave NE, Renton WA 98056

When I retired in 2007, my husband said to me, "Now you can attend the weekly McDonald's Board Meetings!" I thought this sounded like a crazy thing to do with ladies I'd never met, but those weekly board meetings with "the girls" soon became one of the highlights of my week! I've loved sharing stories with Evelyn, Billie & Joanie for the past 5 years & even though I know absolutely nothing about crocheting, it has been fun to listen & watch them discuss the finer points of this hobby. We've shared many thoughts, feelings & concerns over the years (like women tend to do), and if girlish laughter could be weighed, we'd be well over a gazillion tons of it by now. Evelyn was indeed an angel here on Earth & our weekly board meetings will never be the same without her. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of her life. She will forever own a piece of my heart.

We have known Evelyn for 40+ years, and we will miss her very much. Every time we were with her or talked with her on the phone was always a good and fun experience. She was one of a kind, so loving, caring, and thoughtful.

One of the highlights of our lives was when Evelyn, Betty, Jean & Jim drove out to visit us in Georgia several years ago. We were constantly laughing. We had a great time.

We will especially always treasure the 3 months we spent with Evelyn in Seattle in early 2009 while we, and she and her sister Jean, were caregivers to their brother, our dear friend, Jim. That is also quite bittersweet, as now all three of them are gone.

Dear Sandy & Diane,
Was saddened by the loss of your mother. She and Adron were always so precious to me when I was Bonnie Dempsey. She was always a great friend to my mother who is also in Heaven now. She was such a great Lady. My love to you and all the family members. Love, Bonnie Reeves

Dear Sandy, Diane and family,

I always thought it was a great day when a truck full of kids and parents from Tenino pulled up to a raspberry farm in Puyallup one summer day. The Dempsey "kids" gave my Mom the siblings she never had!

Mom said she always thought Evelyn was so glamourous - she put her hair in curlers and read movie magazines! And she really was beautiful - inside and out.

Your Mom and Dad always welcomed us into your house - and family. There was always a lot of laughter, fun and adventure.

I will miss your Mom's laugh. She was one of the kindest people I know. I will miss her terribly but will always keep the fond and happy memories close in my heart.

Memories of Love and friendship are treasured forever.
Evelyn played a big part in my wonderful childhood.
The Hagen and Bishop families did so many things together including lots of camping trips to the Ocean.
I will always remember Evelyn; very kind, warm, enjoyed laughing and being around friends.
I will be forever grateful. Mary Ann (Hagen) Wood.

I am saddened to hear of Evelyn's passing. Growing up she & Adron and the Dempsey clan were a huge part of my family (the Newell's). I have so many fond memories of the family gatherings at their house & of Evelyn's kind & gentle personality. My thoughts & prayers are with the entire family.
