Longtime florist and retired Lampasas High School government teacher Evelyn (Friday) McDonald died Oct. 25, 2022, in Baird. She was 100.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Oct. 29, at 2 p.m. at First Street Church of Christ in Lampasas, where she was a longtime member. An informal visitation with the family will begin at noon.
Burial will take place at Bluffton Cemetery in Llano County following the service. Sneed-Carnley Funeral Chapel has charge of arrangements.
Mrs. McDonald was born on Feb. 11, 1922, in Fouke, Arkansas. She graduated from Genoa Central High School in Genoa Central, Arkansas. She attended Magnolia Community College in Magnolia, Arkansas where she earned her teaching certificate. She was voted College Queen for Magnolia Community College in her 2nd year. After earning her teacher's certificate, she began teaching middle school history and coached boys' basketball.
She married William Fred McDonald on December 22, 1941, in Gulfport, Mississippi. In 1956, she opened Lampasas Flower Shop and operated it along with her family for many years.
In 1966, she returned to the teaching profession and taught history, economics, and U.S. government at Lampasas High School for 33 years. During this time she acquired additional degrees and certifications from then Southwest Texas State University. She was often voted teacher of the year by her students. She was instrumental in initiating trips to Washington D.C. for the high school students each summer.
Mrs. McDonald was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; two sisters, Henrietta Vickers and Pauline Scoggins; and three brothers, Jack Friday, J.E. Friday, and William Friday.
Survivors include her two daughters, Joan Smith and husband Ron of Baird, and Elizabeth Dickison and husband James of Lometa; two sons, Bill McDonald and wife Theresa, and Stephen McDonald and wife Dawn, all of Lampasas; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two sisters, Iona Lincycomb of Lampasas and Ima Nell Sams of Arkansas.
