Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2005.
Evelyn Friberg DeKold Neville Evelyn was born January 24, 1915 in Chicago Illinois, as the first child of Almida Friberg (nee Persson) and Hermann Friberg. Evelyn became a resident of Vero Beach in the middle 1930's where she has resided for the last seventy years. She died on October 9, 2005 at Indian River Memorial Hospital following an extended illness. Evelyn grew up in Lake Hamilton, Florida, graduated from Haines City High School in 1932, and then attended business school. Her initial employment began in the office of The Lakeland Packing Company, Lakeland, Florida. In 1935 she moved to Vero Beach and worked as an accounting machine operator for the Indian River Exchange Packers. She soon sought and obtained work as a legal secretary and abstract clerk for the law firm of Merriman, Boring, and Sutherland. In 1952 along with her late husband, S. R. DeKold, Evelyn established the DeKold Real Estate Agency in a downtown building situated on 14th Avenue. She remained a licensed real estate broker for the next 40 years. She was an active member of the Vero Beach Board of Realtors, serving in several official capacities including one term as president. Evelyn was named Realtor of the Year in 1961, which is the same year she became vice-president of District Three of the Florida Association of Realtors. She was a long-standing active member in the Business and Professional Women's Club and also the Pilot Club of Indian River County. Evelyn also was the second chair violist for the Indian River Community Orchestra in the early 1950's. While winding down a forty year career in real estate Evelyn in the late 1970's opened and managed two women's boutiques: Evelyn's House of Fashion on 14th Avenue, and Eve Grantier in the Portales del Vero off Ocean Drive. This latter business offered fashions for the discriminating buyer and was noted for the beauty of its interior design. In semi-retirement Evelyn opened the Psychic Shop and Bookstore, a small book, gem, jewelry, and gift shop which catered to thoughtful individuals interested in additional perspectives on life. Evelyn has been preceded in death by her brother John Hermann Friberg of Upsala Sweden, and her two former husbands, Grantier L. Neville, and Sebastian R. DeKold. She is survived by two sons, Richard DeKold (Margaret), Vero Beach and their four children, Sherry Fergus (Greensboro, NC), Kevin DeKold (Lakewood, CO), Shawn DeKold (Duluth, GA), Paige Caperton (Orlando, FL), nine great grandchildren, and Donald F. DeKold (Lynda), Gainesville, FL, and their two children, Erik F. DeKold (Tampa, FL) and Kathryn W. DeKold. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Indian River County Historical Society, the Humane Society of Vero Beach, or a worthy charity of one's own choice. SERVICES: A memorial service at Strunk Funeral Home will be announced at a later date.
