Evelyn King Pine, born "Mary Evelyn King" on January 20, 1940, in
San Antonio, Texas, and passed away on September 16, 2024, in the city of her birth. Evelyn loved God, was a devoted military wife and a cherished mother to 5 children, a proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and a great-grandmother to 13, with three more on the way.
Evelyn's kitchen was a warm and inviting space, filled with the love of family and friends, as she was a wonderful cook who enjoyed bringing people together around the table. A true friend to animals, especially cats, she had a compassionate spirit that extended to all living beings.
She had a passion for reading, enjoyed solving crossword puzzles, and loved the excitement of playing Yahtzee. In her adventurous youth, Evelyn lived in Japan and later in life traveled, visiting many US states, Germany, France, Canada, and Mexico. She treasured her frequent trips to Utah, Florida and Arizona, to visit her children and grandchildren.
Evelyn spent 27 years of her life in Washington state, before returning to San Antonio in 2004, where she continued to create lasting memories with her family. One of her favorite places was always the Lakewood/Steilacoom, WA area where she found joy and peace for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents (father of record) Ira J. King (1948), (biological father) Jesse Irvin Casbeer, Sr (1961), Audrey Benefield King (2001), all of
San Antonio, TX; her sister M. Genevieve King Gabbard (2021) of Selah, WA; her brother Ernest J. King (2024) of
San Antonio, TX; her mother-in-law Lois Strand Pine (1992) of Sunnyvale, CA and Lakewood, WA; and her beloved soulmate Robert William Pine (2004) of Lakewood/Steilacoom, WA, whom she married in 1981.
Evelyn is survived by son Robert (Maria) Woolverton and grandchildren Alex, Amber; daughter Elizabeth (Jim) Storey and grandchildren Chris, Trista Bosley (children of Elizabeth); daughter Louise (Dave) Espinoza and grandchildren David, Aja, Carmelle (Tunstall), Sky, Trey, Sierra; daughter Cheryl (Michael) Zeitlin and grandchildren Amanda, Jennifer Pedlar (children of Cheryl), Lucas; daughter Deborah (Vincent) Kennedy and grandchildren Jeffrey Hagge (child of Deborah), Robert.
She had many dear friends over the years, but none dearer than Lorna Williams, who was like a daughter to her. Evelyn is also survived by Lorna Williams of
San Antonio, TX and Lorna's daughter Gabrielle Williams of Fredericksburg, VA.
Evelyn passed away peacefully while on hospice care at home, surrounded by the love of all of her children, with daughters Cheryl and Deborah, as well as granddaughter Amanda, by her side. Grandson Lucas and son-in-law Dr. Michael Zeitlin, M.D., were nearby.
Special mention for daughter-in-law, Maria Woolverton, who was also by her side for the week prior and final days of her life, lovingly and respectfully providing a dignity of care, which contributed to Evelyn's peaceful state in her last hours.
Evelyn's legacy of love and devotion to her family will be deeply missed and forever remembered. She was diagnosed with young-onset dementia (and later Alzheimer's disease) in 2004. She lived with the condition for 20+ years, with the loving care of her children.
Evelyn and Bob are together, again. Their ashes will be combined, then scattered into the waters of the Puget Sound, near Steilacoom, at a future time. A memorial service to be held, information to follow once confirmed.
