Ewart Eugene Phillips, 98, of Lubbock, Texas, passed away on November 20, 2025. Born September 4, 1927, in Miami, he earned degrees from Baylor University and the University of Texas. A lifelong educator, he taught in several Texas school districts and served 17 years as professor and Foreign Language Department Chair at Howard Payne University, also teaching at UT and Texas State.
A U.S. Navy veteran of 44 years, he retired as a Commander. Ewart was an avid reader and traveler who loved flying and had a warm sense of humor. He was active in Lions Clubs International for six decades, serving as District Governor, and was a 50-year member and past International President of the Wally Byam Caravan Club. A devoted Christian, he served his churches in many roles and was a member of Bacon Heights Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Lillie Nell. Survivors include his daughter, Debora Phillips; granddaughter, Rashel Sifford and husband Ryan; and great-granddaughters Paige, Katy, and Chloe.
Ewart donated his body to Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, and a private burial will be held. Memorials may be made to Texas Lions Camp.
