Wise and soulful, we are forever grateful to Herb for shepherding us through the first day of marriage equality in Connecticut on Nov. 12, 2008. He shared in this moment as joyfully as we did, and perhaps acknowledged its importance with a greater understanding than even we had at that time! We will miss you, Herb. Love to all.

He joined Jacob Grudberg Belt & Dow the year after I did and was one of the sweetest, smartest and most gentlemanly people I ever met. I was honored to call him a friend.
I remember, we were trying a case together involving a fish farm in Pakistan in front of a very crotchety old Judge. I kept getting admonished by the judge for apparently not keeping a poker face during Herb´s direct examination.
He was extremely supportive of me throughout my career, and I was blessed to know him.

Herb officiated at one of the first gay marriages in Connecticut, in New Haven, with our dear friends, Peg and Jenn. He was incredibly proud.

F. Gruendel Obituary
On December 17, 2024, an eagle landed at the Branford home of retired CT Appellate Court Judge F. Herbert Gruendel. It circled the house twice, flew up and down the street, and at 2:12 in the afternoon it took him under its majestic wings and... Read F. Gruendel's Obituary
