Fannie Walker Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 13, 2018.
Fannie Mae Bennett Walker was born on April 9, 1925 in Summerville, Georgia to Jack and Ida Bennett. She departed her earthly life on February 7, 2018 following an extended illness. She was educated in the Summerville, Georgia public school system where she received numerous awards for academic excellence. She demonstrated an enthusiastic love for learning early in life. Following high school graduation, she attended Morris Brown College where she completed course work which prepared her to teach in the Georgia school system for several years. She was a life-long learner and encouraged all with whom she came in contact to take advantage of any opportunity to expand their knowledge through reading, traveling, and engaging others from all walks of life and all generations.
She was united in marriage to Archie Guy Walker on March 5, 1945, who preceded her in death. She was a loving, attentive stepmother to James Archie Lee, who recently preceded her in death. She and Archie Walker had eleven children together, Gloria Bridges, Patricia (Reavis) Mitchell, Archie Walker Jr., Anthony (Susan) Walker, Sandra (Richard) Stephenson, Brenda Walker, Gregory (Liliann) Walker, Carla Walker-Miller, Pamela Walker, Waweise (Mark) Schmidt, and Vincent (Sharetta) Walker. She leaves more than 100 grand, great-grand, and great, great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews to cherish her memory. Her grandchildren, Marlowe Darnell Walker and Rakale M. Walker preceded her in death.
Consistently pleasant and loving, she enjoyed so many things. She loved people, and her home was always open to family, friends, and anyone who needed help. She was an accomplished seamstress, and taught each of her daughters and one of her sons and grandsons to sew beautifully. Later in life, she took up quilting, and of course, excelled.
One of the best cooks in Nashville, she took pride in celebrating every Christian holiday, creating traditions that will live on.
Mrs. Walker was an avid reader and made sure all her kids made frequent use of the local library, and were well read. She enjoyed traveling, watching LA Lakers basketball, and doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles. More than anything else, she loved being a mother and a grandmother to many.
Conscientious and determined to provide the best life possible, Mrs. Walker was ferociously protective of her family. Constantly engaged in community, school, and church activities, she served as Homeroom Mother for many of her 11 children’s classes, and was active in the school PTA. For decades, she faithfully collected donations for her favorite charity, the March of Dimes, founded to improve the health of mothers and babies by preventing birth defects. She was an active member of the Missionary Society, the Carnation Board, and a Stewardess at St. John A.M.E. Church until her illness. She especially enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School activities.
Periodically working outside the home, she held numerous positions. She assisted with children’s activities at the 18th Avenue Community Center where she was adored by all. She was employed by Hearn Cleaning Service as a supervisor and was a Safety Patrol Mother in the Wharton School and St. Vincent De Paul area.
The epitome of class and grace, she truly left the world a better place than she found it. We are grateful for her loving legacy of compassion, dignity, respect and hard work.
Mrs. Walker trusted God and prepared well for her eternity. With confidence in God’s love, we commend her to His care and look forward to our glorious reunion.
