Floyd Allen Obituary

Published by Tennessean from Apr. 1 to Apr. 11, 2018.
Floyd Allen, Jr.

Nashville - "The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord: and he delighteth in his way."

Psalm 37:23

Floyd Allen, Jr. entered this life on September 6, 1946 and transitioned to be with the Lord on March 28, 2018. He was born to the late Floyd Allen, Sr. and Lenora Hardy Allen.

Floyd grew up in Clarksville, Tennessee and at an early age he united with Concord Baptist Church. Later he moved his membership to Greater South Baptist Church, Springfield, Tennessee under his father-in-law, the late Reverend W.D. Crowder. Floyd was a faithful member of Greater South Baptist Church and served as a deacon for 31 years. He was also a devoted Sunday School teacher and Bible Study leader.

On June 12, 1976, Floyd married Gertrude Crowder and they were married for almost 42 years. To this union their son, Floyd Allen, III was born.

As a lifelong enthusiastic learner, Floyd continually pursued education. He

graduated from Burt High School in Clarksville. He received Bachelor's Degrees from Austin Peay State University and Trevecca Nazarene University. His graduate degree was from Tennessee State University. He also had degrees from Draughons Business College and Nashville State Technical School.

Floyd's professional career included manager and district manager with The Tennessean/Banner newspapers, American General Life Insurance Company where he earned awards and trips, and Golden Circle Life Insurance Company. His last employment was with the education department at the Juvenile Detention Center in Nashville. Floyd was also an essential part of the Crowder Funeral Home Staff.

A glimpse of the man: Floyd could be described as a "Gentle Giant." He was a quiet, easy going man who enjoyed life and loved to laugh. Floyd was devoted to God and enjoyed worshipping, good sermons and gospel singing. He visited the sick and would help others in any way that he could. He was an avid bowler and belonged to numerous leagues. He enjoyed traveling; spending time with family and friends; reading; watching CNN, sporting events, and court TV. His son was his stylist and enjoyed coordinating outfits for Floyd. When his closest relatives were asked if they had ever seen Floyd become angry, the answer was no. Floyd was a good man.

Floyd is survived by his devoted wife and best friend, Gertrude Crowder Allen; son, Floyd Allen III; sisters, Zelema (James) Hoosier (St. Louis, MO) and Jennifer Allen (Clarksville, TN); brother, Dr. Donald (Lena) Allen (Ft. Washington, MD); aunt, Bobbie Lee Darden (Clarksville, TN); uncle, Anthony Graves (Clarksville, TN); adopted daughter, Wendolyn Majors and her family--Jasmin (Joshua) Graham, Jade, Jordan, Jayla and Xavier Majors; nieces, Ursula (Rodney) Dogan (White Plains, MD), Fran Blackman, Rhonda Crowder, and Jeana (Paul) Chase; nephews, Eric and Tim Hoosier (St. Louis, MO), Edward Crowder, Nathan (Sherree) Crowder, Shawn (Rebecca) Hobson (Cookeville, TN) and Morris (Chandra) Jamison; sister-in-law, Davie (Glenn) Jamison; godson, Dontez Huskey; many great-nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and Greater South Baptist Church Family.

Services were Monday, April 2, 2017, 12 noon, at Greater South Baptist Church with Pastor Samuel Stratton, Eulogist; Interment was in Hills of Calvary Cemetery

I just found out that Mr Allen passed and am deeply saddened. He was like a father figure to me when we worked at Juvenile. I am in the process of getting education back together and it will not be roght without him. We had a man full of vision and wisdom. Your family was blessed.

I worked with Mr. Allen at DCJD in the education department several years ago. He was a fine man and everyone loved him. I remember him as a pleasant person with a keen sense of humor. He always had a kind word. The world was a nicer place with him in it and I am certain all of your family in Heaven is running to meet him with open arms. My sincere condolences to his wife, whom he greatly loved, and to all the family.
