Bethlehem police captain
Francis John Gyorek, 82, of Tamaqua and formerly of Bethlehem, died July 1, 2008, at Hometown Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tamaqua. Born in Bethlehem, he was the son of the late George and Mary (Freeman) Gyorek. He was the husband of the late Joan (Frey) Gyorek.

He was graduate of Liberty High School.

He served in the Army with the National Security Agency and the Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

He was a captain in the Bethlehem Police Department, retiring in 1991 after more than 37 years of service. He was instrumental in the installation and upgrading of the communication system, the first system of its kind in the Bethlehem area.

He was a member of the Bethlehem Fire Department.

He was member of SS. Peter and Paul Roman Catholic church, Tamaqua.

He was a member of the Tamaqua V.F.W. and Fraternal Order of Police Star Lodge 20, Bethlehem.

He is survived by two sons, Richard "Skip" Frey and his wife Anne of Drums and Jack Frey and his wife Karen of Nazareth; a daughter, Jill Frey of Charleston, S.C.; a brother, William and his wife Vyella of Chelsa, Ala.; four grandchildren, Kristen Frey, Lauren Frey, Shawn Frey and his wife Phoenix and Michael Frey; two great-grandchildren, Carrington and Liam; a friend, Florina Martin of Tamaqua; and a former daughter-in-law, Roe Frey of Blakeslee.

In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by three brothers, Joe, John and George; and four sisters, Margaret Parker, Helen Kazor, Mary Marx and Christina.
