Francis C. Henrick

(Frank / Fran Henrick)

Sarasota, FL - Francis C. Henrick, 88, passed away on August 23, 2024, from Alzheimer's disease with his youngest daughter by his side. He was born on July 13, 1936, in Lowell, MA, the son of the late Grace C. Henrick and Francis A. Henrick.

Francis grew up in Andover, MA, in a family with three other siblings. He graduated from Phillips Academy, Andover, MA; MIT, Cambridge, MA; and received his master's degree from Colby College in Maine. He also spent two years in the US Army, of which he was quite proud.

During his lifetime, he was blessed with two wives. Having married his first wife Barbara (Bobbee) Petroff Henrick in 1959 in Bristol, CT, they were blessed with five children - three sons and two daughters. Francis and Bobbee shared 44 wonderful years together working hard, raising their family, building friendships and fellowship. Well deserved, they retired early to Old Saybrook and Vero Beach, FL. They enjoyed their kids and grandkids family visits, friend gatherings, family reunions, traveling and playing - they filled their lives with a lot of many cherished memories until her untimely death in 2003.

Retired and in FL, God was working on his broken heart - Francis was reunited and married his high school sweetheart Patricia (Patsy) Doyle Henrick in 2004. Many believe their reunion to have been spiritually and gratefully crafted by Bobbee as well. Patsy was a welcomed and joyful addition by all to the Henrick and Petroff families, as was her entire family. Francis and Patsy added 20 great years to their fond childhood memories continuing the Henrick family reunions, making strong new friendships in their Sarasota neighborhood, and renewing their old ones as the spunky couple they were.

Though Frank's initial career plan was to become a doctor, when a teaching job became available at Bristol Eastern, and he was encouraged to apply by his in-laws, that trajectory quickly changed. Frank soon found his true calling to be teaching. Though still a young graduate himself, he was enthusiastic about working with his students and impacting their passion for learning. After three years in Bristol, he began his tenure at Staples High School in Westport, CT. For 35 years, Frank taught chemistry, physics and calculus. In addition, he coached many sports including baseball and soccer. As head coach, he led both the men and women soccer teams to a state championship.

He was an avid tennis player and semi-pro pitcher but enjoyed all sports. Playing sports, he became extremely competitive, which was contrary to his usual gentle demeanor. He was a true gentleman, a kind soul. Throughout his life, he volunteered many hours to different organizations, always wanting to help the less fortunate and also spread the good news. The Monroe Jaycees; his Churches: CT-Assumption/Westport and St. Johns/Old Saybrook and FL-St. Thomas Moore/Sarasota; Emmaus; Cursillo; Danbury Prison Ministry; Hospice; the CT Club of Sarasota; and the Little Venice Theater were just some that benefited from his service.

Of all the accomplishments in his life, he was most proud of and grateful to God for his wife, family and friends. This is where he truly felt alive, or 'terrific' as he so often exclaimed. Whether hanging with his 'kids' and their families, at a Red Sox spring training game with his brother and the 'old gang' from New England, at the CT Club with his 'old' teacher friendships and newly formed friendships, playing 45s, dining at his favorite restaurants, or simply working in the yard, he couldn't help but display that magnificent smile of his.

Although his family and friends know that he was ready to be with his Lord and Savior, and he is now reunited with all his loved ones gone before him, his physical presence will be missed dearly here on earth.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia Doyle Henrick; three sons, Michael (Katrina) Henrick, Jon (Justine) Henrick, Stephen (Gail) Henrick; two daughters, Cheryl Henrick and Karen Tedeschi; a stepson Lyden (Araceli) Anderson; sister Janemarie Henrick; sister-in-law Marilou Petroff, brother and sister-in-law Steve and Carla Petroff; sister and brother-in-law Eileen and Warren Hastings; 16 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. He also leaves his long-time best friend Jim Noonan, a true Irish man that always put a smile on his face.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Francis was preceded in death by his brother George Henrick; sister Ann Mulrooney; father and mother-in-law Walter and Olga Petroff; sister-in-law Sonya Petroff; and stepson Mark S. Anderson.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2024, from 1:00 - 5:00 pm, at the Mill River Country Club, 4567 Main Street, Stratford, CT. The family welcomes all who knew Francis/Frank/Fran to join us in sharing a memory or two, some joyful laughter, good food, and raising a glass in his honor.

I often think of Grandpa as I sit in class with these students, trying to carry on his legacy. I am attaching some words I sent the family after his passing:

As the students start slowly returning to campus over these next few days, I am trying to emulate and honor the legacy that his kindness, empathy, and care has made-not only in my life-but in the countless humans lucky enough to pass through his classroom. To be shown such dedication service others embodied in each of my family members, as the norm not the exception, is a blessing beyond measure. It is the true inheritance behind the names Suslenko, Petroff, Cormier, Henrick and it resides in my bones as a constant reminder of who I am-proud and humbled by the remarkable example of those who came before me.

Mr. Henrick was one best men I ever knew, so I learned what being a good father was from him, and he was the best of fathers. Thank you, Mr. Henrick. I know that God holds you now. John

I am eternally grateful for having been blessed with two amazing parents Frank Henrick and Barbara (Petroff) Henrick. Imperfect, as we all are, but perfect in the ways that mattered.
They both had an unfaltering belief in God and Jesus and lived their lives in his image. Compassionate, giving, loving. They shared "the message" with kids, adults and those in prison. Having a house of five children, they graciously, welcomed others into their home, to help them on their journey. Dad always volunteering, the little free time he had, Mom making the house a home with a beautiful smile and big hug to greet you.
Dad taught high school for 38 years. A job that found him. I remember graduated students visiting our house in Monroe. It blew me away that a teacher could have that kind of relationship with, and impact on his students. I knew then he had found his calling.
Undoubtedly, the gates were held wide open for Frank & Bobbie, Mom greeting Dad to begin his next journey.
Francis C. Henrick, I will miss you, I love you and may God bless you
Proudly, your son
Jon

Cheryl, I'm so sorry for you and your family's loss of your dad. I still remember meeting you and your dad the summer you moved to Westport. You were in a bicycle accident at the end of my road. The police called your dad, and he came running to be there for you. He was so grateful that I stayed with you until he got there. Such a good man. . May he rest in peace.

I have such fond memories of my Uncle Fran. Among them were visits to the "big house" in Westport. As a kid , I always looked forward to the special cereal cabinet filled with sugar cereals (Mom only bought us Cheerios and Rice Krispies), Stew Leonard's chocolate milk and fudgsicles and family dinner. I remember one Easter when he bought us giant chocolate roosters in our Easter baskets. I never felt so lucky!! I always felt so safe and loved there. My mom was his baby sister and they had a special bond throughout their life. I find comfort in knowing she was waiting to greet him when he journeyed Home. He was a special man and I feel blessed to have had him in my life. I had a conversation with him a short while after he shared his Alzheimer's diagnosis. He told me it was not something he would have chosen but he would do his best to walk the journey with courage, love and acceptance. His Faith in God was strong and he said he knew God would be walking with him each step of the way.. A true testament to who Uncle Fran was. I know he will be loving my mom in Heaven until I can be with her again some day. Thank you God for this wonderful human being we were all so fortunate to know and love and be loved by in return.
