Francis Levins Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 21, 2019.
Francis Xavier Levins Jr., (Frank) of Newtown, originally of Philadelphia, passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the age of 76. Beloved husband of Elisabeth (nee Videira); father of Frank Sutton (Jessica) and Antoinette Conville (Michael); cherished Pop of Brianna Gramm (Sean), Brittni Crivaro (Kris), Michael Conville, Lilianna Conville, and Olivia Conville; beloved great grandpop of Logan Gramm; and caring brother of the late Mary Hemphill (Ken), Robert Levins (Helen), Charlotte Wolfe (Carl), the late Thomas Levins (Theresa), Gerard Levins (Barbara), Michael Levins (Cheryle), and Richard Levins (Katherine). Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Frank was blessed with a large and loving (albeit strict) Irish-American family, having been born on Elfreth's Alley, the oldest continuously inhabited residential street in historic Philadelphia. As an adolescent, he danced on the Philadelphia-based show, American Bandstand, from 1957 until 1961, an impactful period of his life which resulted in many lifelong friendships. After going into military service in 1961, where he served in the 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg, NC, Frank studied at Spring Garden College and then graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology. He was a mechanical engineer for 40-plus years and retired in 2014, with the latter part of his career spent mostly in sales. Widowed in 2000, Frank later married Elisabeth in 2002. They met during a ballroom dance weekend in the Catskills. Although endowed with an easygoing personality, Frank was passionate about a number of things in his life, one of which was his love and dedication to his twin granddaughters whom he helped raise with his late wife. In the latter chapter of his life after meeting Elisabeth, his love of dancing, food, history, and desire to explore other cultures "took flight." Most pronounced was his wanderlust, the need to see more and more of the world. In their 19 years together, they traveled to south and Central America, Southeast Asia, and eastern and western Europe. He also fell in love with Portugal, Elisabeth's birthplace, to which he traveled 18 times during their married life. There he acquired a taste for espresso coffee, whole fish, soccer, and grew to love his Portuguese family and the country's long history and heritage. At the end of every trip, Frank was always ready to re-pack his bags. He wanted to be remembered as a "nice guy" he would always say, doing the least amount of harm during his earthly passage, but keenly aware that he was not perfect and had not always done the right thing. As he aged, he came to appreciate family and friendships more and more, and became increasingly demonstrative about his deep feelings. He was the consummate gentleman and truly a "gentle man" with a quiet strength. Frank was also a strong believer that this life is not the end but only a bridge to another existence. Relatives and friends are invited to share in Frank's Life Celebration on Saturday, December 28, 2019 beginning at 9:30am followed by his funeral mass at 11:00am at The Olde Church of St. Andrew, 135 S Sycamore St, Newtown, PA 18940. Interment at Resurrection Cemetery in Bensalem, PA will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to The Wounded Warrior Project in Frank's memory would be greatly appreciated. We will forever remember Frank as a very nice guy with a friendly and charming smile.
We will miss the moments we spent together. We hope we were able to make him feel welcomed by trying to use our best English during our neighboring tea time meetings.
Personally speaking, I will forever remember his last words to me: Bye Paulinha
Thank you, Elizabeth (Betinha) for bringing Frank into our life. We are lucky to have ever met him.

Our eternal uncle Frank warmly adopted many of us as his nieces/nephews.

Such a giving and splendid guy, always with that beautiful smile. I loved to make him laugh. His sense of humor was perfection: intelligence + warmth!

I feel so lucky to have created memories with him and Elisabeth in Paris, Mexico, Philly and most recently in his beloved Portugal. Ill cherish them forever.

Thanks uncle Frank, we love you!!!
I said it before and I say it now: YOU ARE AMAZING.

Dear Elisabeth, Our deepest condolences to you and your family. We had the pleasure of meeting you & Frankie in Punta Gorda, Fl, for NY Eve dinner last year and then again on a trip to Siesta Key, FL, in January 2019. Cindy and I really enjoyed those engagements. I admired Frankie, such a laid back type guy, and just really a nice guy! Just very sad. Frankie, RIP........

As one of many of Frank's cousins, I was shocked when I heard of his passing. I was close to Frank in age (I'm 78) and I fondly remember Frank, his elder sister Mary, and brother Bob along with the rest of the Levins cousins when we would gather together at Grandmom Levins" house at 271 S 4th St in Philly for Thanksgiving, Christmas and many weekends. My Levins family of 8 (2 parents, 4 boys (I'm the oldest), and 2 sisters) were the "foreigners" of the "clan". We lived in New Jersey! What great times we had as young kids playing in Grandmom's back yard. We "foreigners" were so proud of Frank and Bob when they were dancing on Dick Clark's American bandstand as we watched them on our 8 inch, black and white TV. Elizabeth, although we have never met in person, I enjoyed looking at the pictures of you and Frank's many trips. Please know that I, and my brothers and sisters, have you and the family in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Bob Levins.

This is a stunning and beautifully written tribute to my friend Frank Levins who I had the pleasure of knowing as fellow AB Regulars and later at reunions. Whoever authored this tribute has truly captured the very essence of Frank Levins as a loving family man and "gentle soul" and gentleman. RIP. Thom Cardwell

To Frank's family : I never got to meet him personally, but he was one who brought me such joy as a teen. My life was so full of AB and the regulars. To be reconnected in recent years was like a dream. Frank was one of the nicest guys in his responses to me and by his posts I could tell the joy he found in life. I will treasure the last DVD of the dance party where he was, indeed, dancing up a storm. You all are in my prayers as you say "till we meet again" to this wonderful man. Sending love from MN and from my heart to yours.

My deepest sympathy to the family. I am a first cousin...my mother, Helen, and Frank's father, we're siblings. We grew up in Southampton, NY, where I remember Frank and his siblings visiting us in the summer. So sorry we didn't' get to see our cousins more often. He sounds like he was a very kind person. My prayers are with you all.

Elisabeth we only met once...but I was a good friend of Carole Scaldeferri/Spada ...and I came ot something in So. Philly and she couldn't make it..but Joe Fusco was there and was happy to see my "old " boyfriend, Larry Brumbach and also so happy to see Frank , your wonderful guy who of course was a gentleman as always...You were lucky to have him...and spend the years with him that you did...You made a wonderful couple...and I know he loved those 2 girls of his, the twins...I feel as Frank does...I hope we will meet again ...cause I, too, am a widow...was very young and hope for that to happen some day...Keep the faith and know we all care...Love, Dolly (Dolores Occhipinti, Monroe, NJ...)
