Francis Scales Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 5, 2011.
The Reverend Dr. Francis Paul Scales, formerly known as Purnette Roosevelt (Punkin) Scales, of Roanoke, was born on April 8, 1947, in the city of Roanoke, Va., to the late Marie Alice Scales and the late Francis S. Kasey. He passed away suddenly on Saturday, February 19, 2011. His sudden death has left family and friends shocked and saddened. Purnette served in the Air Force and the United States Army prior to becoming ill and therefore needing to medically retire from the military. He was preceded in death by his devoted mother, Marie Alice Scales Kasey; and devoted father, Francis S. Kasey. He was married to Carollyn Sue Light Scales who also died at the same time. Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Minister Carmen S. Thornton (Carlton) and Latrice Y. Scales, of Richmond, Va.; three grandchildren, Carlton Thornton Jr., Jade Alston and Myka Lewis; three aunts, Mary V. Scales and Eloise Dean, of Roanoke, Va., and Helen Hooper, of Maryland; one uncle, Fred S. Scales, of Roanoke, Va.; devoted friend, Clarence Turpin; and other relatives and friends. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 5, 2011, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with Dr. Lucille Lawton officiating. Interment will be in the Culpeper National Cemetery 10 a.m. on Monday, March 7, 2011. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.Hamlar-Curtis.com.

I just found out that Punkin had passed. Spoke with him a few days before his passing and he was so excited to be going back to Roanoke for a visit. He will truly be missed. We can be assured that he is happy and without pain. Peggy Pippins, Cols. OH

My Sincere condolences to the family. Mr. Scales was such a kind, gentle, and caring man. He came to our Elementary Military Support group as a guest speaker and spoke to all of our students about his experiences while serving in the armed forces. Our kids just loved him and to this day, I still have students asking me when Mr. Scales will come back to talk them. How truly unfortunate for them and us that we will never have that opportunity again. Thank you Francis for your many years of service for our freedom, your kind words, your caring heart, and your gentle smile. You will be sorely missed by all who knew you. MAY YOU REST IN PEACE.

My thoughts and prayers to all family members and friends. Laurie Gramento - Horizons Elementary-Lacey WA.
