My symphathy to the Dezelan Family. As a young girl, I remember going on my first plane ride to minor league games with Irene. I could only go if I, as a 16 year old girl could raise the money myself. We went together and had a great time. That trip, visiting my uncle, was just the beginning of all the months and years of his not living at home with his young family and making his way to reach his major league goals. He would bring home stories of memorable events...meeting Ferrah Fawcett, etc. We were spell bound! As a young girl, it seemed like a hard life to live to reach that goal and reach it he did. Miss you Uncle Dude.
With Love to all,

Dear Dad,
You were always my hero! You were an amazing man whose goodness and integrity were only surpassed by your inner and physical strength! You overcame many medical challenges and never complained. You accomplished your professional goal of Major League Baseball Umpire before the age of 40! We were privileged to have you with us as long as we did, thanks to the loving care of Mom. You are finally at peace with no more suffering! I am sure you are smiling in heaven, listening to your polkas, and sharing a beer with your departed family. You touched many lives, and you will be greatly missed. We will cherish your legacy of a life well lived forever. I love and miss you Dad!
Love Always,
Darlene & Matt

Dearest Dezelan family,

Though I never met Mr. Dezelan in person, a gesture he bestowed on me many, many years ago has remained with me to this very day.

My younger sister, Joann, who attended St. James grade school with Darlene, came home one day with an official Major League baseball and gave it to me. She told me that Mr. Dezelan had heard from Darlene that one of her classmates had an older brother who was a huge Pirate-crazed baseball fan. At that time, I had no idea who Mr. Dezelan was nor that he worked as an umpire in the National League. Wow! Can you begin to imagine what that singular act of kindness meant to a skinny grade school kid from Wilkinsburg back in the '60s? After that, I made it a point to follow as many games as I could hoping that Mr. Dezelan might be working behind the plate. What a thrill it was back then.

I'm 55 years old now and deeply saddened by the passing of such a kind and wonderful man. Please except my sincere condolences during this most difficult time and know that I always held Mr. Dezelan in the highest esteem.

I know he walks with the Lord.
