Loved watching Frank Howard and Paul Casanova in 1965 at D.C. Stadium. Does anyone know the color of Frank's hair in the 60s?

I first met Mr. Howard in Pompano Bch. My mom worked as a waitress across the street from the stadium and he suggested we meet.
Mom brought me to the stadium and he was waiting at the gate. He was to me a giant and when he shook my hand, his swallowed mine. He was kind, jovial and polite to everyone. He made a point of introducing me to the visiting team.
Later, I saw him in The Kingdome, as hitting coach. I went to the rail and called to him and he came. He remembered me! Still kind, polite and jovial, we met for a beer after the game. He remembered my mom and we had a laugh. Many actually, as he loved to laugh
When I left, embraced me. I was 8yo again, wrapped up in the arms of this bigger than life gentle soul.
Rest peacefully, Mr. Howard. There is an enormous hole in the world that you used to occupy.
PS: I've still got the ball that he, and the Senators signed. His name is the most prominent.

My great-grandparents 99, this coming summer, told me about Mr. Howard! They told me : some of the home runs he hit, are still traveling! They tell me Mr. Howard hit one out of Washington's stadium. I can say: for my great grandparents, my grandparents, my parents and me! God bless you, Mr. Howard!

I went from rabid Hondo fan in the 60s, to the guy who got to induct Frank into the Nats Park Ring of Honor in 2016. A great player and friend for many years. I'm still not sure he really grasped the impact he had on so many of us who loved the Senators and came of age in the 1960s.

We had the privilege of meeting Frank this past July after an invitation from his grandson Mitch. Mike (now 65) was a huge fan of his as a boy and was thrilled to meet his childhood hero. Frank lived up to all of that and more. He was so kind, quick as a whip and full of energy. His enthusiasm and memory for detail really made his stories come to life. He was charming, charismatic and only had positive things to say about everyone. A true legend and wonderful role model. Our sincere condolences to his wonderful family. Thank you Kathy, Becky, Chuck, Mitch and Angel for the opportunity to share in that special evening with us. We are forever grateful. May your sweet memories bring you joy in this time of such sadness. I´m sure he´s hitting home runs out of the park in the field of dreams in heaven.

I met Mr. Howard through a close friend of his, Mr. Joseph McCrudden, who he played with in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He was a very nice man. In later years I ran into him at the Baseball Hall of Fame, and in Westchester, NY at a signing where he treated my wife and I like gold. RIP Mr. Howard

I had the great pleasure of meeting my boyhood idol, Frank several times. The gentle giant couldn't have been kinder and more welcoming. The man made such an impact on me, I named my only son after him. His spirit will live on in all of the people that he touched...

I took this picture of Frank Howard at RFK stadium when I was 9 years old, my mother took a group of cub scouts to watch a senator´s game. Not knowing it was camera day until we got there I asked my mom for the camera. She told me there´s only one picture left on the film. I said I have to get a picture of my favorite baseball player Frank Howard. After walking all the way around the field I found him. He was a giant compared to a 9 year old boy. I kept this picture throughout my childhood with the hopes of getting him to sign it someday. I finally got the chance at a sport expo in Washington D.C. many years later. I was truly honored to meet such a nice man.He gladly signed my picture. Thanks for the great memories, Rest in peace

I met Frank through his wife Donna, we were schoolmates together, back in the day! She wanted me to come down from Maine and cook her some lobsters, before she past, so I did. That is when I had the opportunity to meet Frank for the first time. What a kind, peasant man who was always generous with his time, and a spectacular role model for his fans ! He will be belovedly missed, and my most heartfelft sympathy for his family .

To my childhood hero. You will live forever in my heart and my mind. You are the best baseball player I ever saw in my lifetime. I am grateful I got to be a tiny part of your Washington Senators history. Long live "HONDO" !

The audio track I posted to Youtube of Ron Menchine calling the play when Frank hit his last home run in Washington, D.C. Frank hits the ball foul that went behind into the screen behind home plate. It is custom for the fans at the games in Washington, D.C. then, to make a mimic sound of the ball rolling down the screen and hitting the support rope to pop up into the air and over the rope, back onto the field. Frank comes out for a curtain call in the audio.

As a young man, I worked in a grocery store and it was my pleasure to carry out the groceries for Mr. Howard. He left an amazing admiration of him, as he was a gentile giant. I thank God that I met him, and will forget him.

Pompano Beach, Fla, March 1971. My father and I went to see the Senators play a spring training game. As I stood with my back to the Washington clubhouse, my dad said, "Rick, turn around". I was absolutely stunned. Standing right in front of me was an absolute giant of a man...my hero, Frank Howard. Dad told him that he was my favorite player and asked for a photo. Big Hondo nodded and smiled and said, "How are you, young champion?". I literally could not speak. Sensing my nervousness, he knelt down to my level, lowered his voice, put his gigantic arm around my shoulder and talked baseball with me. Now, he could have just signed an autograph and continued on with his work. He chose to stay and talk to my father about his military service (Dad was a career Marine), baseball, etc for ten minutes! Frank signed two items for me with personalized inscriptions. Right before he left to jog to the field, Frank grabbed a baseball, signed it, "To Rick, best wishes, from your pal, Frank Howard". "Enjoy the game, Ricky", Frank's voiced boomed and he jogged away. Character. Class. Integrity. What a great man. P.S. I still have those items. I will have them next to me when my time comes. RIP, big Frank. You are beloved.

While a member of the Senators, I witnessed Mr. Howard hit the longest home run that I ever saw at the Cleveland Municipal Stadium. It was hit into a separation access way between the grandstand and the bleachers. If Mr. Howard hit the ball 10 feet to the right, he would have had the only home run into the permanent bleachers. There is no doubt the he should be in the baseball hall of fame.
Rest in Peace.

Very few, if any, know this story about Frank Howard. In 1966 and 1967, the Howard family and my family belong to The Georgian Country Club on GA. Ave. in Aspen Hill, MD. It was never a full CC was only the pool and a club house, where the owner, offices and snack bar was. When the Senators were home, the Howard family would come to the pool during the day, then Frank would leave the pool around 2 to go to the ball park. Us kids, left him alone, but Frank would tell my dad that they can come to him to talk. I wrote this story on a Washington Senators Chat group in 2004, when all were writing about the massive home runs Frank would hit. I too was a die hard fan as a kid of the Senators, no matter the outcome per game and season. Frank would get in the pool and had a about nine kids clinging on to him, as he went around and around circles with these kids making motor boat noise. Image a super star doing that today in a public pool. One of Frank's daughters was on the list, as no one knew that. She had to write back about my email that bought her back many memories. We have been friends since that email was on the chat. Mike Marmer Germantown, Maryland (A Wheaton, MD. kid) My wife Linda, Casey Cox, Myself and Frank at his 80th birthday celebration in 2016. Frank signed my Kiss It Goodbye Book, I got in 1973 at Brentano's Book Store, the last copy, in Wheaton Plaza.
