Frank McCarthy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2009.
McCARTHY, Frank J. III (Francis) Of Auburn, born in Boston, formerly of Los Angeles, CA, Yakima, WA, Orlando, FL, West Simsbury, CT and Ossining, NY, passed away on September 8th at home. Loving husband of Penelope Gould-McCarthy, adoring father of Emily McCarthy of Reston, VA and devoted brother of Joanne (McCarthy) Dermont, Kathleen F. McCarthy, Peggi McCarthy and Dr. Daniel G. McCarthy; beloved step-father of Benjamin and wife JoAnn (Gargan) Gould, Lillian (Gould) and husband Thaddeus Kreuger, and Joseph Gould. After receiving his BA from Boston College in 1964 and an MBA from the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College in 1966, Frank served the country honorably as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Intelligence Corps. Afterward, he became a marketing leader in the grocery industry, wine industry and his chief professional passion- produce. As vice president of marketing for NJ-based Albert's Organics, he was instrumental in applying classical marketing techniques to produce. In 2007 Frank was named to The Packer 25 as one of the top 25 produce industry leaders. In an interview with The Packer magazine, he expressed his love of produce, passion for marketing, and belief that employees should be empowered and trusted. He attributed much of his success to listening to what others had to say and to working as a team as a business model. Throughout his career, Frank was active on industry boards and committees, teaching, writing and lecturing about the issues of the day. Even as he excelled in his profession, he kept fit, stayed active as a runner and skier and always found time to work with his hands, whether renovating old homes or pursuing his model aviation activities. A memorial service will be held at the First Parish Unitarian Church, 13 Maple Street, Mendon, MA on Monday, September 21 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Tuck Annual Giving,100 Tuck Hall, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH 03755 or the United Fresh Research and Education Foundation, 1901 Pennsylvania Ave. Washington, DC 20006. I have known Frank since our days together at the General Foods Kool- Aid Division in the early 70's. What a great, passionate guy with . We went to each others home for dinners, played lousy folk songs together on our guitars after dinner and had great moments of kinship, always with lots of laughs. Frank even willed his apartment in Rye NY in the Arcade Building to where I lived with my family for a couple of years before going to Europe with GF. Since then we have stayed in touch and I have followed his career movements around the USA. Many good things happened to Frank recently and I am so sorry he is gone just when the future brightened. I will always remember him and wish you all the best for a future without Frank
