Frank Pesile Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 19, 2020.
Frank W. Pesile, 78
NYC Sanitation foreman, lifelong athlete, dined with presidents, met the British Royal Family and lunched with the VP of Peru
Frank W. Pesile, of Huguenot and South Jersey, passed away on Tuesday, June 2, 2020, in Staten Island University Hospital after a brief illness. He celebrated his 78th birthday on Sunday, May 31.
Born in Manhattan and brought to the Island as an infant, he grew up in Port Richmond, attending PS 20, graduating Port Richmond High School, Class of 1960, and attended the City University of New York-Baruch College.
Athletic in high school, his coach was Lou Trella, who guided him in PSAL meets. At age 15 he did chins and pull ups in excess of 33 repetitions and in 1972 Coach Trella told him his record still held at that time. Frank enjoyed weight lifting in his gym, handball, road bike touring at the Jersey Shore, his motorcycle and F-150
He was married to his childhood sweetheart, Kathleen (Lofrisco) Margiotta from West Brighton, celebrating 52 years in 2019.
After high school Frank was employed by the U.S. Postal Service at Canal Street and the Custom House in Manhattan until he was called to the New York City Sanitation Department, serving 28 years as a sanitation worker and foreman in Districts 4 & 6 in Manhattan, 1 & 2 as well as the Arthur Kill Landfill on Staten Island. During his career, he received commendations from several Sanitation commissioners, and was offered the Sanitation police shield, which he declined.
He served as a grand juror for five years on several Island homicides.
He was also the owner of Pesile Liquors in Randall Manor for 10 years.
Frank always said the biggest thrills of his life were meeting Wernher von Braun at Wagner College in 1965, attending the Cape Canaveral launch of Apollo-Soyuz in July 1975, as a guest of Congressman John Murphy. Also, being a guest at White House dinners with Presidents Carter, Nixon and Bush; meeting Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan; watching his wife receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in 2001, and her Papal Knighthood as a Dame of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem in 2003.
Well-traveled to over 42 countries, the Pesiles met the British Royal Family, and in 2006 lunched with the vice president of Peru, Admiral Luis Giampietri, at his summer villa, surrounded by armed guards with machine guns. Giving each a cigar, Frank said, "Please remember my face, don't shoot me by mistake."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Mrs. Dolores Papirman of Whiting, N.J.; brothers, Michael Jr. of Phoenix, Ariz., and Kenneth of Middletown, N.J.; two nephews, Kenneth Jr. and Andrew; two nieces, Mrs. Lorelei Shull of Little Silver, N.J., and Ms. Melanie Pesile of Wall Township, N.J.; two grand-nieces, Julia and Angelina, and one grand-nephew, Zachary.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Our Lady Star of the Sea R.C. Church, 5411 Amboy Rd., at a time to be announced once social distancing is relaxed.
As a special tribute in memory of Frank, much-needed donations to provide life-saving care on Staten Island can be made directly to Staten Island University Hospital Foundation, 475 Seaview Ave., Staten Island, N.Y. 10305.

I am so sorry to hear about Frank. I had the pleasure working with Frankie Mints in the post office. He was a true gentleman and just a wonderful man. He could tell a story and he made me laugh until I cried. Sending my condolences to his family.
He is remembered fondly by myself and many others.

You were a real gentleman and a great friend. This man wouldn't even hurt a fly, always ready to give you the shirt off his back. You had a really big heart and shared his love for life with everyone he met. Rest in Peace. You shall be missed.
