PEBBLE?BEACH, CA – Frank J. Reiser, Retired Naval Commander died in Tigard, Oregon on February 5, 2014 of natural causes. He was born June 11, 1918.
He is survived by one daughter, Sally Reiser Whittington (Roy); a grandson, Mark Whittington, (Cortney); and two great-granddaughters, Linnea and Emma Whittington. He also has one surviving sister, Annette Doherty, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by the love of his life, Elenore (formerly Elenore Ramsey).
Cdr. Reiser was a longtime resident of Pebble Beach and was a member of the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, the Pacheco Club, and was a
member of the Legion of Valor. An avid golfer, he enjoyed working daily crossword puzzles, playing cards, cribbage, dominoes, backgammon, and dice. He was especially devoted to his wife's relatives and her grandchildren.
Cdr. Reiser was awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism as pilot of a fighter plane attached to the USS Sangamon in action against enemy Japanese forces during the battle off Samar on October 25, 1944. While our escort carriers were under attack, he led a group of six fighter planes in a strafing and bombing attack that resulted in the retirement of the enemy warships. His airmanship, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.
Cdr. Reiser epitomized what it means to be an officer and a gentleman.
At his request, there was no funeral service.

OVER 70 years ago, OUR "UNCLE FRANK" BECAME A DECORATED MILITARY WWII HERO (The following is the formal Citation when He was Awarded the NAVY CROSS. IN HONOR, HUMILITY, and GRACE, WE ASK A BLESSING ON ALL WHO SERVED THEIR COUNTRY.

Citation:

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Navy Cross to Frank J. Reiser, Lieutenant Commander [then Lieutenant], U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism in operations against the enemy while serving as Pilot of a carrier- based Navy Combat Plane embarked from the U.S.S. SANGAMON (CVE-26), in action against enemy Japanese forces during the Battle off Samar on 25 October 1944, in the Philippine Islands. When our escort carriers were under attack by heavy units of the Japanese Fleet, Lieutenant Commander Reiser led a group of six fighter planes in a strafing and bombing attack against the enemy force and, pressing home his attack despite intense and accurate antiaircraft fire, contributed materially to the forced retirement of the enemy warships. His airmanship, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
