Frank Ward

frank was my football coach and pos coach as well as my baseball coach, he was a great mentor and very talented and fun man to be around ,, he had many phrases nic names and comments that were unique , humorus , and direct ,I kept in touch with him and the last contact was he wantd me to visit and walk the va track with him with adiscus at age 94/95 he was the best terry franc

As boys, we looked to our male teachers for life lessons and examples of challenges we might face in our futures. He is often in my thoughts. Mr. Ward taught me history in the Lower School, lacing the textbooks lessons with his real life experiences. Some of the Japanese history we studied became highly useful to me later as an Army officer in the Far East. His example -- serving in the defense of the Aleutians during WWII and the Korean War -- probably counted equally with the textbooks. He and the several other veterans who were our teachers then probably had much to do with my subsequent military service and follow-on career with the Department of Defense. He put a face and personality to the experience of the soldier. My salute and gratitude for his positive contribution as a teacher!

Mr. Ward was my first History teacher at St. Louis Country Day School back in the late 1950's. He was very energetic and was well-liked by his students. He would often use jokes and funny sayings as a motivational device when he was teaching, to get his younger students into the spirit of the lesson, and this helped a great many of us. Mr. Ward also taught geography and ran the stamp club, and I spent many happy hours learning the names of foreign countries and collecting stamps from those same countries, thanks to Mr. Ward. He was a great teacher, and will be missed.

Mr. Ward taught us football, basketball and baseball from 1955 to 1958 at St. Louis Country Day. I idolized the man, despite the fact that he often said, "Crawford, you pineapple!" Imagine my surprise when we moved to Lake Forest, IL 20 years later and found that Mr. Ward was at Lake Forest Country Day, much loved as ever.

I idolized Mr. Ward from 1955-58. He coached me in football & baseball(5th -7th grades) and always injected great humor with the fundamentals of any sport. He also taught history and could mesmerize our class with Army stories that I can still remember. His favorite character was Private Charlie Barvels, who could never do anything right. Frank Ward taught me history and coached me in football, basketball and baseball in fifth through eighth grade at St Louis Country Day School in the late 50's. He loved to create nicknames; after I made a tackle on a muddy, wet day, he christened me "Mushy Marshallton." His stories about WWII and Korea were frequent and spellbinding. I read about Coach Frank Ward's passing this morning. He was my athletic coach, geography teacher, and Summer camp director during the years 1961 -1966 in Lake Forest, IL. A true Renaissance man with a love of art, history, sports, fellowship and friendship, personal excellence, and humor. Throughout my life, he was an inspiration.

We were so fortunate to have Frank for thanksgiving two years ago. His wealth of history was so interesting, we have passed it on to so many people. We will miss him along with UVA track team. What a great person, he will be missed by many
