Frankie Mae Gilbert

November 7, 1957 – June 10, 2025

Petty Officer First Class Frankie Mae Gilbert (née Evans) passed away on June 10, 2025, in Elkhart, Texas. Born on November 7, 1957, in Palestine, Texas, she lived a life marked by service, music, and unwavering dedication to her family and country.

Frankie graduated from Westwood High School in 1975 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Stephen F. Austin State University. Her academic pursuits reflected her deep interest in understanding and supporting others-a passion guiding her throughout her life.

Answering the call to serve, Frankie enlisted in the United States Navy, where she rose to Petty Officer First Class (E-6). Her final duty station was on the USS L. Y. Spear based in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Over 21 years of active duty, she distinguished herself through commitment and excellence. Even after retiring from military service, her devotion did not wane; she continued to serve tirelessly within the veteran community, offering support in filing disability claims and camaraderie to fellow servicemembers.

Beyond her military career, Frankie was a gifted musician. An avid pianist and accomplished vocalist often called a "songbird," she also mastered the alto, baritone, and soprano saxophones. Music was not just a hobby but a vital part of her identity-an expression of joy and connection that resonated with those around her. During her time in the Navy, bowling became one of her favorite pastimes, offering recreation and fellowship.

Frankie's faith was central to her life. A devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, she found strength and purpose through worship and community.

She leaves three beloved children: Yahlamed Israel (f.k.a. Toneisha Evans) of Louisville, Kentucky; Natasha Gilbert of Phoenix, Arizona; and LaShonda Gilbert of Palestine, Texas. Her legacy continues through five cherished grandchildren: Tre'varion Gilbert, Johnathan Gilbert, Bellamy Gilbert, Kal-El Israel, and Ari-El Israel.

Frankie is also survived by six loving sisters: Linda Sumuel of Palestine, Texas; Martha Ann Thomas of Virginia Beach, Virginia; Sheila Evans Brantley of Tucker, Texas; Lizzie Evans Martinez Alvarez (Ramon) of Bullard, Texas; Doris Evans of Tucker, Texas; and Joyce Cooper of Atlanta, Georgia. She held close bonds with many extended family members, including a host of nieces, nephews, cousins-and godchildren, Mr. & Mrs. Kim and Mack-who were all touched by her warmth and generosity.

She was preceded in death by her late husband, Larry Gilbert; parents, Dora Lee Foster Evans and Roscoe Buck Evans (U.S. Navy retired); sister, Celestine Roberts; and brother, Anthony Foster.

A woman whose heartbeat for service-whether through uniformed duty or acts of kindness-Frankie Mae Gilbert will be remembered for the strength she carried with honor and the music she shared with joy.

May you "Fly Away" to your eternal home in heaven. A crematory memorial service will be announced soon.
