Franklin James 'Lynn' Eves Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2023.
Franklin James (Lynn) Eves died on Monday, October 2, 2023 at the age of 81 from heart complications. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank & Claire Eves.

Lynn spent his childhood in Victoria, B.C. and graduated from University School (now St. Michaels University School) in 1958. Racing for quarters after school, Lynn discovered his unique talent for running which he pursued at University School and for the YMCA track team. In 1959 Lynn competed in the Pan American Games in Chicago and in 1960 while at the Canadian Olympic trials, he tied the then official world record for the 100 meters with a time of 10.2 seconds. Then, as an 18-year-old, he went on to represent Canada in the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, Italy. He attended Oregon State University on a track and field scholarship and while there, he again represented Canada at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia. Lynn held several school records including being a two-time Northern Division champion in the 440. While at OSU, Lynn was a houseboy for the Kappa Delta sorority where he met Jean Speckman whom he married in 1965. They had three children while residing in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

After obtaining his Bachelor's degree at OSU, he began his career working for Safeco Insurance, eventually starting his own independent insurance agency. Lynn's outgoing and friendly personality were perfectly suited to his business.

In 1984, Lynn married Janet Abraham. He and Janet enjoyed country western dancing, competing with the Country Connection dance group. Some of Lynn's favorite past times were white-water rafting, snow skiing and following all kinds of sports. He especially loved when anyone shared an interest in running. As a lifelong runner, Lynn served on the board of the newly formed Portland Indoor Track Meet, was involved in various running groups, and ran socially, throughout his life as his health allowed.

In 2007, Lynn retired, selling his business to oldest son, Greg, and moved to Arizona where he enjoyed golfing, and tending to his citrus trees.

Lynn is survived by ex-wife, Jean Eves, their children, Greg (Lisa) Eves, Brad (Meggan) Eves, and Katy (Adam) Bowles; 7 grandchildren: Avery, Ryan, Ashlynn, Morgan, Lindsey, Jack, and Carson; as well as ex-wife, Janet Abraham, her sons; Peter and Jayson and brother, David (Sheila) Eves.

Donations may be sent to the Oregon State University athletic program.

I am in tears, as I knew Lin very well, but hadn't seen him in a while. I too, use to see him as I walked my dogs past his home. Such a great man. Always so friendly and a fellow Vancouverite. When I visited home, I would always bring him back"patches" for his Olympic Jacket that he was so proud of. I am truly sorry to hear of his passing. He will be sadly missed. May you rest in forever peace my friend. Condolaneces for his family and friends.

Lynn was a neighbor who used to be one of 4 guys who'd have morning gatherings near his house. We used to see him while walking our golden retrievers and he would always come over, say hi and want to pet them as they reminded him of his granddog. We'll remember him as a cheerful guy who liked being in the outdoors.

I was on the Oregon State Track Team with Lynn. He was a great friend and we had lots of fun together. After college, our families spent time together socially. I did not see much of him in recent years after he moved out of Oregon. I will never forget the fun times we had, and his big smile. He not only was a great track athlete, having been on the Canadian Olympic Team, he was also a great guy and great friend.

I never knew Lynn as "Franklin", just as Lynn. When I attended Sunset High School on Beaverton from fall of '78 to spring of '81, Lynn would come out and run intervals with us on the track. Lynn was such a great guy and so amiable.

First met Lynn in 1969. He was my first boss after my military stint. We ended up being very good friends. And good running friends also. He will be missed.
