Fred Coates Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 3 to Nov. 5, 2008.
COATES - Fred passed away Sunday, November 2nd, 2008 at the age of 81, after living a rich and rewarding life with family and friends. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife and best friend, Joyce; sons, Kim (Diana) and their children Kyla and Brenna; Dean (Cathy) and their children Breanne, Bradley and Zachary; Dale and his daughter Rachael (Cody) ; great-granddaughter, Lenayoh; sister, Peggy; brother, Bruce (Dorie); brotherin-law, Arthur Ries (Thelma), Morley Ries (Eleanor); extended family, Bev, Kent and Lara Peters; plus many nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Herbert and Jean Coates; parents-in-law, George and Kate Ries; brother, Bert; sister-inlaw, Bea Coates; brother-in-law, Clifford Wilkinson and Mac; sister-in-law, Elsie McCaig; and infant grand-daughter, Britteny Coates. Fred was born in Saskatoon and attended Buena Vista School. He worked various positions with the OK Economy and Shelley Brothers Warehouse before beginning his career with Eatons. He was employed with Eatons for 39 years until retiring in 1990. While working at Eaton's Fred met his soul mate Joyce, and they were married in 1955. Together they raised a family of three boys. Fred had a wonderful way with children. He loved and adored all of his grandchildren so much. During his lifetime Fred's love for travel took him and his family to Disneyland, LA, Hawaii, The Maritimes and cruising the Caribbean. During his retirement Fred spent time doing many of the things he enjoyed best: camping, fishing, golfing, games with friends and many creative woodworking projects. He spent many hours volunteering and put a smile on everyone's face. Fred was always a cheerful person. He loved music and singing. All who knew Fred became accustomed to his joyful whistling, and many familiar songs and sayings. Fred and Joyce celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2005. Fred celebrated with the best of them and even played the spoons for the crowd. Fred had many years of good health with family and friends. He was able to enjoy his 81st birthday before his passing. We celebrate Fred and the joy he has brought to many lives. A public visitation will take place on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Funeral Home. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. from Hillcrest Funeral Home (east on 8th Street, turn right before railway crossing). Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to the charity of your choice. Family and friends may send email condolences from the website www.hillcrestmemorial.ca . Arrangements are entrusted to Jeffrey Sully, HILLCREST FUNERAL HOME 477-4400.

Dear Coates Family
I read Fred's obituary and was so touched at the life he lead and the legacy he leaves. How wonderful to be married to your soulmate and have the love of children and grandchildren. I am so sorry I never met him but knowing Kim all of these years and seeing the special man he is I know that a part of Fred lives on in all of his children and grandchildren.
My most heartfelt sympathies for you loss

Dear Joyce and family,

I was saddened to hear that Fred passed away and send you my best wishes.
I am privileged to have met both of you with your families and enjoyed your (now world renown) hospitality when visiting.
I know from the brief time I had with you both that Fred was very much loved by all who met him, with an infectious smile that seemed to befriend anyone he talked to. Those that are genuine in spirit and heart always leave the deepest impressions, and I'm honoured to have had the opportunity to know Fred and the genuine kindness of your family.
I hope I have the opportunity to catch up again in the not too distant future.

Dearest Joyce and Family:
My thoughts, prayers and love are with all of you during this very difficult time.
Fred was one in a million a gentleman that is so rare, a man who was truly loved by all.
I will be forever grateful to both you and Uncle Fred for welcoming me into the family and for Uncle Fred always making me feel so special and loved. I treasure the quick visits the smiles, the music and the humour. They are memories that I will take with me forever. I am sorry that I will not be there on Friday; please know I am in spirit. Auntie Joyce I will make sure to make special time for you and I during my next visit to Saskatoon.
Love Colette

Kim - I want to extend our kindest thoughts to you and your family at this sad time. I still remember having coffee with your Dad in the cafe downstairs in Eaton's - he was the "shoe guy" and I, the candy counter girl! He never stopped trying to get the scoop on what you "were really up to" when we were in our senior year at Nutana and even, on occasion, let me buy that twenty-five cent cup of coffee!! I wish you memories that will make you smile and bring a warmth to your heart. With our kindest thoughts - Nancy (Hamilton) and Tim Muzyka, Brent and William, and all the Hamilton family.
